Nancy and Nick
How We Met
Much like Cory and Topanga, Nick and I were young when we met and fell in love. We both attended the same middle school and had the same classes since 6th grade but it wasn’t until 8th grade that we started the friendship that would lead to a beautiful relationship. After months of talking, becoming friends, then best friends and tons and tons of notes passed back and forth during classes, we became a couple at the end of a track meet on March 17, 2005, in La Joya, TX.
While Nick will try to deny it, I approached him first. You see, even though we had classes together, we did not talk until one of my bridesmaid’s, Daisy, gave us each other’s AIM screen names. And though we talked a lot on there, Nick was always too shy to say “hi” in person. Well, being the independent woman that I am, I spoke to him first during breakfast time one day. I still remember looking at him and his face getting flushed as I said, “see, I talk to you in person” while holding my carton of orange juice. Little did I know that would be the start of many conversations with the man I would end up falling in love with and enjoying life with.
13 years later, we are getting married! We have overcome years of long distance and trying times and have never once fallen out of love. 13 years is nothing compared to the lifetime of love we are about to embark on. To say I’m excited to marry my best friend would be an understatement – only God knows how much I love this man for he is the one who led me to him and filled my heart with the purest love for him. December 29, 2018, cannot get here fast enough!
how they asked
Let me take you back to June 17, 2017 – the day I said “yes!” But before we get there, here’s some backstory: Spring of 2017 was very busy for me. I was in my last semester of the didactic year of PA school and stress was at an all-time high trying to figure out housing for rotations that were set to begin in the summer. When our 12 year anniversary came up on March 17, we attempted to make time to celebrate after I got home from lectures and at least enjoy a nice dinner. Well, the universe had other plans. While pumping gas to get ready to go to Houston, my battery decided to die. We proceeded to walk to an Autozone down the street, buy a new battery, carry it back to the car, and have a kind stranger install it for us meanwhile, it got late and the restaurants closed since it was a weekday. Needless to say, our anniversary did not go as planned. But Nick, being Nick, insisted on making it up to me during my one week break when we would go home to the valley before rotations started.
His romantic idea to celebrate our 12 years of dating was to book a photographer and take some nice pictures just like we had done for our 10 year anniversary. I, loving everything romance and any excuse to get dolled up, of course, loved the idea and agreed to look for a photographer and a location. The day that we booked for our photos also happened to be the day of my baby brother’s HS graduation party so I took it as an opportunity to get my makeup, hair, and nails done. What I did not know was that while I was out getting all dolled up, Nick was out running his own errands.
When the time came to take our photos, everything was perfect. The location, Casa Polonia in Weslaco, TX, was gorgeous, and the photographer, Stephanie Rios, was excellent. The photoshoot was so much fun and Nick made me feel gorgeous and loved throughout the entirety of the shoot. As we were getting to the end of our one hour slot, the photographer took us to my favorite part of the house, the front with the beautiful iron doors, and we got ready for our last photos of the day. Nothing about Nick’s behavior had been strange until that point when he started talking to me and thanking me for letting him do nice things like this for me. To be honest with you, I’m not entirely sure what happened next except Nick getting down on one knee, pulling out a gorgeous princess cut engagement ring, asking me to marry him and me asking him, “are you serious? what is going on right now?!” while jumping up and down. I cannot explain how happy or excited I was at that moment. To know that I was going to spend the rest of my life with the man of my dreams was overwhelming but such a blessing.
After it was all said and done, Stephanie told me that he had texted her and told her all about his intentions. She was very excited and helped him achieve a great proposal. After we finished there, we got in the car and he told me how he had one of our best friends, Mario, go to Houston to pick up my ring which is I why I had no clue that this was going to happen since Nick and I share one car and he had no means by which to go get a ring himself. While that was exciting and sweet, nothing topped the next part of his story – while I was getting ready for the shoot during the day, he had gone over to my parent’s house, asked them for their blessing with the use of my baby brother as a translator, and asked his family to meet us at my brother’s party venue to celebrate with us.
Nicholas is a man that goes above and beyond to make me feel special and loved but on June 17, 2017, he took into the next level. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined a better proposal. This man truly loves me so much and I, him. Stay tuned for years to come because our love story is just beginning.
