How We Met
I think the stars had to have aligned to have us meet so organically. I met Sushil the day I was celebrating my birthday in Washington, D.C. He is originally from New Jersey and happened to be in town for work. One of my and Sushil’s mutual friends invited him out to my birthday celebration. He was a little hesitant to attend a birthday gathering without knowing the birthday girl but little did he know he made a choice of a lifetime. I felt so comfortable with him since the moment he greeted me to say Happy Birthday.
Later that night at the bar, we were drinking, talking, dancing, and having the time of our lives together. While we were on the dance floor, we spotted a vendor who was selling roses and I told him how roses are my favorite flowers. Without any hesitation, he buys me the roses and hands them to me telling me that I deserve them. As the night went on, our connection got stronger. Through the next week, we went on dates and got to know each other before he had to leave to go back to New Jersey. We were in a long-distance relationship for about 1.5 years and then Sushil moved to Virginia and we have been living together since.
How They Asked
In May 2020, Sushil’s parents, Sushil’s brother (Sumanth), me and Sumanth’s girlfriend (Nikki) had a France trip planned to celebrate Sushil’s mom’s 50th birthday. It was a trip that was fully booked and planned but due to COVID, that trip had to be canceled. Sushil did not want to give up on this France trip he wanted to gift his mom for her 50th birthday even after her birthday had passed. After we were all vaccinated, he started to plan a Paris trip for the second time all on his own. September 2nd, 2021 we all went made it to France! We first visited Nice, then flew to this beautiful town, Bordeaux, and then Paris.
The day we got to Paris, it was supposed to rain for most of the evening through the night. But Sushil’s plans persisted. Prior to the trip, he told me to pack nice dresses for fancy dinners we will be going to as a birthday dinner celebration!
I obviously thought nothing more of it since this was a trip for his mom! September 8th, we have all arrived at our Airbnb and started getting ready for the “Birthday Dinner.” Sushil suggested we head to the Eiffel Tower first so that we can get some great pictures before dinner since we were all dressed up anyway.
I followed him down these stairs next to the Seine River with the most spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower. As we keep walking down the river, I spot a heart on the floor made out of roses and lights. He then leads me to the heart and I say, “OH I know what’s happening,” and give him a little smirk. He then proposes after telling me how much he loves me and how excited he is to spend the rest of his life with me. I was shaking and couldn’t believe I was being proposed to with this view of the Eiffel Tower, it all felt like a dream. It was the easiest question I’ve ever had to answer.
Down on his knees, with this beautiful princess cut ring, he says, “I think you take the ring now.” Laughing at his goofiness, I say, “I think you put the ring on me now.” The ring fit perfectly and it was exactly what I wanted. The surprises don’t end there. Sushil tells me to close my eyes and that there is another surprise for me. Wondering what else there could be, I turn around to see my parents and my brother! They have been in France for a couple of days, helping Sushil plan out this proposal and I had NO IDEA.
I cried and I laughed. It was a very emotional moment. No rain, clear skies, and the entire family was there for this once-in-a-lifetime occasion. We then spent the rest of the night at Monsieur Bleu, a restaurant nearby the Eiffel Tower where it downpoured and we were at the one table outside that was fully covered and didn’t get rained on. During that dinner, I received a job offer, which I had been waiting for. Many times throughout that day, luck was on our side! We love everyone who helped Sushil and me get the most wonderful proposal of our lives!
