How We Met
Matt and I grew up in the same small town in BC, Canada, and actually went to high school together (although we were not high school sweethearts, as many would guess). We dated briefly during University but stayed friends due to close mutual friends. After taking opposite life paths for several years, we found ourselves together once more in 2016.
How They Asked
We decided back in November 2019 to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, one of the seven summits, and a very challenging adventure. After hiking for 5 days up the Machame Route, it was time for our summit attempt. Starting at 11:30 pm we hiked up the mountain through the night in -15c weather and successfully made it to the summit at 6:30 am! Where we got to witness the most incredible sunrise we’ve ever seen lighting up the crater, our path, and the whole of Africa.
Not only did we both make it to the summit (something I honestly didn’t think I was going to do 24hrs earlier), but we did it together. And then to top everything off, after taking our summit photo, Matt stepped aside, pulled out a ring from his jacket, and asked me to marry him.
At that moment I was completely surprised, all I could think about prior was just making it to the top, I had forgotten a proposal was even an option.
I couldn’t imagine conquering the highest mountain in Africa with anyone else by my side. Matt has always been my rock, and now he gave me a rock, on top of a very big rock. (Lol, sorry for my awful joke) We are best friends, partners in everything, and he’s the love of my life. I can’t wait to start the next chapter of our lives together. I mean, if we can climb one of the seven summits, we can do anything.
Although we don’t quite have any plans for Everest anytime soon…
