How We Met
In 2010, I began college at Johnson and Wales University. A couple of weeks in, my friends and I decided to go to a party at one of the fraternity houses on campus. On entering the fraternity, we were greeted by my soon to be fiance, and given a tour of the house. At the end of the tour, I found myself talking with my fiance while my friends proceeded downstairs. As I was about to take the first stair, he grabbed my hand, spun me around, and kissed me. From that moment on we were inseparable.
how they asked
On September 5th, 2015, we took off with about 18 of our friends and family, and headed towards the Caribbean. A couple days into the trip we landed at our first island. We spent the day jet skiing by the pink beaches of Nassau and swimming in the clear blue water. That night we had dinner with the group and laughed and joked about when we’d get married or have kids. I laughed along with everyone and wondered myself when that day would come. We had talked about it numerous times but never gave it much thought, or so I believed. The following morning we rushed off the boat to get to our scheduled snorkeling excursion. The reefs looked beautiful with colorful fish swimming all around us. We spent the rest of the day lounging on the beach and drinking rum runners. When we got back, my fiance insisted that we hurry for our next excursions. In the rush of it all, I didn’t have the slightest idea what was about to come next. We hurried down from our room and across to the docks outside the boat. After a few minutes waiting, a white sailboat crested around the back of the cruise ship, and headed towards us. By this time, our family and friends had gathered around the docks, waiting for this boat to get closer.
I’ll skip the boring details where we boarded the boat, got the “be safe” spiel, and sailed back out to sea. The charter was a bottomless champagne cruise that we began taking full advantage of. It wasn’t until my 4th glass that my fiance grabbed my drink and asked me to slow down. I hadn’t noticed everyone had started taking their time finishing theirs. About 2 hrs in to the cruise, the sun started to set out on the horizon. The music on the boat began to get quiet, our guests taking their places at the seating around me while my fiance fidgeted with his bag. I was in mid conversation when he walked up to me and dropped to one knee. My jaw dropped. I had not expected this proposal and was completely taken aback by the beauty of our surroundings. Here we were, on a tropical island, with the sun setting, and my best friend was asking me to marry him. I began to weap and asked “Right now?” At this he laughed and said “Yes I’m asking right now, and I also need an answer.” I couldn’t help but laugh and say “yes! yes! oh my god yes!”. He started laughing and kissed me. I’m not sure where I was at that point but I lost all track of time and space. It was as if I was kissing someone in space and nothing else was real. After a few moments I came back to reality to see all our friends smiling and raising their glasses to us. It was the best moment of my life.
