How We Met
Ian and I met at college at a small school in Scranton, PA. We both played basketball and knew each other through that. At the time, I was not looking for a relationship and neither was he. My best friend actually had the initial crush on him! (Which we joke about to this day). She was the one who introduced us but there was no denying that Ian and I had chemistry.
We didn’t start dating initially but within a few months, he surprised me with a giant fort (yes, like chairs and blankets and lights) with pizza waiting for me inside to celebrate our first Valentine’s Day together. The rest is history!
How They Asked
Ian’s family owns a lake house in the finger lakes area of New York. We had been planning a trip for months but with our busy schedules, we couldn’t find the time. He graduated from Physical Therapy school on May 12th and decided that we would take a trip the following weekend to celebrate! I had a tough day at work Friday so I was pushing to leave sooner rather than later for our fun weekend. He suggested that we waited for my dad to get home from work before leaving, which I thought was odd. I persisted and we ended up leaving before he got home. Ian got up early Saturday morning and allowed me to sleep in. Little did I know that he was outside calling my dad to ask for his permission to marry me! Because he couldn’t do it the day before (oops, my bad). It was calling for rain all day, so we decided to go to the wineries to have a few tastings. Ian decided that he didn’t feel too well and wasn’t going to drink so I drank and thought nothing of it.
We got back to the house a few hours later and the sun was finally shining. He suggested that we sit outside on the balcony, overlooking the lake. He also suggested we stay in our nicer outfits which were strange since we both love sweatpants. Anyways, he handed me two bottles of wine. One was full, but the other had a rolled up scroll inside. I unraveled the paper and read “The Haduck” (my last name) on the top.
We love the show How I Met Your Mother and, if you’re familiar with the show, he created my very own playbook!! The letter went through all of the events that we’ve experienced together over the past 4 years with the last few numbers saying “buy a ring” then “ask her parents”.. and then when I turned the scroll over “hope she says yes” and by the time I realized it he was on one knee!
I immediately started crying the happiest tears I’ve ever cried. He still says that I never technically said yes because of how much crying was involved but there was no question about me saying yes! We didn’t have anyone around to capture this perfect moment so we did it ourselves with the greatest selfie of all time.
