How We Met
Nathan and I lived down the street from each other as kids, but never really knew who the other was until high school. He was a year older than me and a mutual friend introduced us, formally, my junior year and his senior year. We had both recently ended previous relationships and needed dates to prom. So he asked me, and I agreed to go with him! It was the first of many perfect nights we would share together over the next six years. It didn’t take long to get to know each other, become close friends, and then more. We spent the next year together and he came to all of my senior school dances and softball games.
Once I graduated high school, I decided to go to college four hours away from home, where I could get my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years. He never thought twice about supporting me from afar and always encouraged me to follow my dreams. We spent five out of our six years together in a long distance relationship, but our love for each other only grew stronger. He made many, many trips to visit (and I still can’t thank him enough for this) and we had FaceTime dates regularly. He was my first phone call, whether I had the best news to share or the worst day; he was my rock through it all and I know he always will be.
how they asked
I knew I wanted to spend forever with Morgan when she left to work at a summer camp in New York the summer after her sophomore year of college. We had been together for three years. She came home from college for about a month and then left for camp for the rest of the summer; it hit me hard. I realized I couldn’t stand to be away from her for more than a few days, let alone months, but I knew I could never hold her back from her dreams. Even though I knew I wanted to spend my life with her then, I knew it was a little too early to pop the question. So fast forward to November 2017. We would be celebrating our six year anniversary in June and I knew it was time to get serious about making her mine forever. So with the help of her sister, best friend, and college roommate, I found the perfect ring. One that I knew she would love and one that I wouldn’t be able to stop looking at on her finger.
Then the real planning began and I wanted it to be perfect! My mom and brother helped me pick the perfect spot and her sister volunteered to take pictures. On the day of, I took her to a nice dinner to celebrate our anniversary (a little early because she was going to be out of the country on the actual date). Afterward, I told her we were going to “stop at a graduation party” at a park nearby. I was still very nervous, even though I knew what she was going to say. I led her to the gazebo, where my mom had set up candles, roses and rose petals and as we walked up the steps my heart was pounding. I told her how much I loved her and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. I got down on one knee and made a joke about hiding the ring in my sock all dinner, just to make her laugh, and then I asked her to be mine forever.
After our families (who were hiding nearby for the whole thing) came up to the gazebo to celebrate with us and we took lots of pictures. I couldn’t stop staring at the ring on her finger and I know I never will!
