How We Met

Blayne and I are from a small, eastern Kentucky town where there are only two high schools. He’s two years older than me, so logically, we should’ve met a long time before we actually did. Blayne was a baseball player (my favorite kind of player) and I was a cheerleader. The one thing I regret the most about Blayne is never getting to watch him play his favorite sport like he did for me. But any who, one of my best friends, Kaitlyn, was actually dating his brother, Blake, about six months before we met. They’re the ones that set up a date for us. Kaitlyn and I were at the beach when she mentioned Blayne, and that I should message him on Facebook. Usually, I let the boys make the first move, but this boy was different. After a lot of texting later, we decided to go on a double date with Kaitlyn and Blake the day after we got back from vacation. 24 hours after that date, Blayne asked me to be his girlfriend, and our first kiss, at a park in our hometown. Log Rock will always be special to us.

We’ve spent countless hours watching the Reds, the Cats, and lots of television. Our favorite pastimes are going to the movies and playing games at Gatti’s. For two people who had multiple chances to meet each other before, we’re as perfect as perfect can get.

how they asked

I’m a Disney fanatic, and Beauty and the Beast is my favorite movie. Blayne recognizes my love, and identifies with it as well. Now, how does that translate to how they asked? It was a Saturday morning in January, and I had plans with one of my best friends, Laura. I was going to pick her up and we were going to get our nails done and eat lunch. Blayne insisted that she pick me up, and I knew there was something fishy going on right then. But, I went along with it. We got our nails done, had lunch, and Blayne picked me up from her about 4:00. We went to Malibu Jack’s, a local arcade for big kids. After spending too much money on games, we went to eat dinner. Blayne was so fidgety, checking his phone multiple times and never fully making eye contact. Just adding more fuel to my fishy fire. We went back to my house after dinner, and as soon as I opened the door, I knew. My living room had been transformed into the ballroom from the dance scene in Beauty and the Beast. There were columns, lights strung on the ceiling, gossamer entwining the walls, and dozens of tea candles and rose petals strewn throughout the room. On the coffee table was a upturned vase with a rose inside, another homage to the movie. On the tv, the “Tale As Old As Time” scene was playing. I was amazed and breathless (and a little nervous if we want to be frank here). Like a crazy person, I sat down on the couch to watch the tv. Blayne sat down beside me, and we talked about the decorations for a little bit. Then, he got down on one knee in front of me on the couch. He said 6 words only: “you know I love you, right?” and of course the 4 requisite words to officially ask me to marry him. It gives me the shudders even when I think about it now, 3 months later. Little did I know, he had some helpers: my brother and Laura. They came out from behind the bedroom door, and it made everything just a little bit sweeter. I’ll never forget that entire day, or how special Beauty and the Beast will always be to me.
