How We Met
It all began 22 years ago when we first met at the ages of 4 and 5 in kindergarten. We attended the same elementary school for 7 years. We were acquainted with one another but never really spoke or spent much time together. Once we graduated, we didn’t see or hear from each other again until 15 years later, when I came across his Facebook page. (Thanks Mark Zuckerberg!) I sent him a friend request and he immediately sent me a message. Ever since that day we have been inseparable. Even the miles that stood between us couldn’t keep us apart. Granted, it was only 60+ miles as I was living in Baton Rouge, LA at the time and he was in New Orleans, LA. His first time coming to visit me we were both extremely nervous. We hadn’t seen each other in 15 years and so much had changed since then. He drove to Baton Rouge and it was like we hadn’t missed a beat. We sat and talked for hours. I didn’t want the night to end.
how they asked
I eventually ended up moving to New Orleans and joined Calvin’s church where you can say we spend most of our time because we are both very active in our church. We also share the same favorite holiday, Christmas. With Christmas being on a Sunday this year, 2016, things couldn’t have been any more perfect. We began planning for our 2016 Christmas program but little did I know I was actually helping to plan our proposal. We called it a spoken word for Christ. On Christmas morning Calvin surprised me with a beautiful Calvin Klein dress that he told me he would like for me to wear for our Christmas program.
His mom bought me some beautiful red heels to go along with the dress and his brother, Casey, bought me matching accessories. We got dressed that morning and he color coordinated his outfit to match mine. Calvin invited all of my family to come to what I thought was the “Christmas Program.” And everyone in the church participated in the spoken word for Christ. We sung our songs and I did a liturgical dance.
After the dance, Calvin sat me next to my parents. We went on with the remainder of the program and it was his brother Casey’s turn. He got up and began singing Holy, Holy, Holy by Donnie McClurkin. After he finished and everyone applauded, he told us that he had one more special song that he would like to sing. So he started singing Brian McKnight’s Back at One. At this point I knew Calvin was up to something because I knew what that song meant to us and besides we were in church, and who sings Brian McKnight for a church Christmas program (LOL) My heart started pounding.
Calvin came, grabbed me by the hand and brought me before the entire church. He looked me in my eyes and said I don’t know where God is going to bring us, but I’m so glad it’s with you. He then got on one knee and asked me to be his wife. With tears of joy filled in my eyes, along with everyone else’s in the audience, I SAID YES!
