How We Met
So Joe is originally from Russia and I grew up in Mexico. We meet in 2014 at a summer camp where we both worked (as camp counselors) where a lot of international people spend their summer. By the end of the summer, we became good friends but I had to go back to Mexico and finish my senior year of high school. That year I planned on applying to colleges all over the US and got accepted to a program In Virginia very close to the camp I had worked at! So that next summer I went back before school started to work as a counselor Once again. Joe and I started to get closer and I liked his goofy personality. We started what you can call a “summer fling” never thinking it would lead to anything serious.
After talking a few weeks later we both realized that our schools were only two hours apart and Joe asked if we wanted to try a long-distance relationship. He said he would regret it later on if we didn’t give what we had a chance and he wanted to start the next important chapter of his life with someone by his side.
After thinking about it for three days (and asking my mom for advice) I decided to say yes and give it a shot. Little did I know that our “summer love” would turn into an amazing four years together filled with adventures and that After graduating and moving in together I would be saying yes once again but this time to spending the rest of my life with him.
How They Asked
As a graduation trip from college Joe planned a surprise road trip, he wouldn’t reveal absolutely any details and just told me what type of clothes to pack. It wasn’t something out of the ordinary because we planned adventures like this all the time we had already driven across the country a couple of years back so I didn’t think anything of it. The day we left Virginia we headed north and after two days of driving, we arrived at Acadia national park in Maine where he had planned three days of camping. We went hiking and kayaking it was so beautiful! But the real surprises came after.
The last day we drove down to Naples, Maine (again I had no idea there was even a second location) and we arrived at the most amazing little cabin on the side of a crystal clear lake with a fire pit, a dock, and even our own boat. Joe said he was going to cook dinner while I got ready. We sat outside by the dock, he made my favorite grilled food and when we were done he took me out to the dock where he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him!
As soon as I realized what was happening I couldn’t contain my happiness specially after I saw he had gotten the ring I wanted. He even had asked my parents when they flew in from Mexico before graduation because he knew how important that was to me. He had planned this all along and even my friends knew!
