Monica and Benjamin
How We Met
Ben and I have known each other for many years – rather, we knew of each other. Years later, we saw each other at church for the first time in a while.
We got to talking, and I learned that he was a medical student at the same graduate school I was about to go to study veterinary medicine.
After telling him how nervous I was to start vet school, he offered to help in any way he could.
I thought it was very sweet of him, but I could only help but think that he was just being a nice guy. He continued to check up on me and how I was doing for a few months after.
We met at school a few times for coffee before finally going on our first date.
And the rest is history!
how they asked
Ben had told me about a scholarship that he was thinking about applying to up in Northern California. I didn’t think much of it after that until one day he told me he was selected to be interviewed for the scholarship that very Saturday. He showed me the email he “received” from the scholarship committee.
The catch was that he would have to fly up to the Bay Area for the interview just days away. Since he was planning on going up for a day, he thought it would be a good idea if we made a trip out of it. When it was decided, he “booked” the flights, and before I knew it we were about to go on our first day trip.
It was all so spontaneous! Ben told me he would have a friend of his who was from the Bay Area send him a list of recommendations for places to eat and things to do, but this friend was talking too long. Friday night, the night before the “interview” his friend finally sent his recommendations.
Among them were restaurants, sights to see…and swimming with dolphins. Dolphins are my favorite animal, but with interview and all, I didn’t think Ben would be open to the idea. He brought my attention back to it, however, knowing how much I love dolphins and said we should do it. We excitedly agreed to see if we could make last minute reservations the next day as Six Flags Discovery Kingdom was closed at that time.
Now it’s the day of our trip and I was so excited!! We flew out, rented a car, and began our fun filled day. We had no idea what were were gonna do exactly, and everything revolved around whether or not we would be able to find reservations at Six Flags. While in the car, Ben called them, and to our surprise (but mostly mine) they just happened to have two spots open!
And we would still have time to get ready for his interview. The already amazing day had just become even more exciting. Since we had time to kill, and no food in our bellies, we went to one of the recommended restaurants, 900 Grayson (best chicken and waffles ever! Sorry, Roscoes). Ben then took me to a park that we found nearby where we walked around on a beautiful day with a view of the San Fransisco skyline.
Finally it was time for dolphins!!!!
We got to Six Flags, went through our orientation, and slipped into our wet suits. Ben and I were split from the rest of the swimmers and met our assigned dolphin, Maddy.
She was cute as can be and, according to her trainer, was learning a new trick. Ben and I would take turns giving Maddy a hand signal that would send her to the other side of the pool to bring something back to us.
Ben went first and I got behind him. Maddy brought him a basketball. Now it was my turn and Ben got behind me. I gave Maddy her signal and she also brought me a ball- but this ball was different. I realized that it had something written on it – it read, “Will You Marry Me?”.
I could not believe what I was seeing!!! Immediately my body went numb.
I turned around and Ben was already on his knee with a box in his hand.
Ben said some very special words that I will cherish forever (including a Nacho Libre reference) before asking me if we could spend the rest of our lives together.
I was shaking, I was crying, but my answer was YES!!
After a few minutes of taking beautiful pictures with my new fiancé, my stunning ring, and the dolphin who delivered to me the best message I could have ever dreamed of receiving, things finally started to click.
There was no interview, there was no actual email from the committee, and this was not just a spontaneous trip.
He wrote the list of recommendations and told his friend to send it to him while he was with me.
He didn’t actually call Six Flags that morning, he was on the phone with his friend. Ben had the entire thing planned from A to Z.
Ben had a dress ready for me, given to him by my mom, hidden with the suit he brought for his interview. He had an amazing videography ready to capture every moment from the proposal.
He told me to get ready quickly so we could meet his brother and sister-in-law to congratulate us and take pictures.
We took pictures by the Bay and ran back to the airport to catch our flight back home. We were greeted by our families at the airport with a banner, balloons and flowers.
Being around our loved ones made it the perfect end to the most perfect day.
I learned that Ben and the rest of my family were amazing actors/actresses. Most notably my mom, who deserves an Academy Award for her performance. I was so amazed and touched by the amount of thought and detail Ben put into planning this unforgettable proposal. Ever since we ran into each other that one day, he has made me the happiest girl in the entire world.
I could not have dreamed of a more beautiful proposal, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with this amazing man.
