How We Met
G and I actually met on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, LA early in my last semester of college. It was about 12 am, and my team had lost the Sugar Bowl. I convinced a friend to still go downtown, and through a few crazy turn of events, we found another friend who just so happened to have road tripped down with a big group of his high school buddies who wanted to experience a game day down south.
I looked around the group and started adding up on my head….”no way was HE the single one!” (Turns out, he thought I was with my friend too!) A few patio drinks and jazz songs later, they were closing down the streets. I insisted we walk to Cafe du Monde- he’d never tried a beignet! It was 5 am when he walked me back to my hotel room.
The next day, I boldly added him on Facebook. He messaged me asking if I had any advice on getting the glitter off of his clothes. We started chatting, FaceTiming, and kept in touch. I figured as soon as winter break ended, that would be it. The first time I FaceTimed him was a total accident- I was actually saving his number in my phone. 😂Instead, I found myself leaving the bars early to chat with him, calling him for advice on which job offer I should take out of college, and ended up inviting him to my senior formal.
He drove 9 hours and rented a tux for a girl he’d met once. To be honest, I’d been hurt through so many relationships in college, etc that just WERENT RIGHT. Something changed when I met G. Things fell into place, but I didn’t want to let myself hope. I was graduating, moving, and oh yeah- he lived 5 states away! He didn’t ask me to be his girlfriend- he told me he had no choice but to do whatever it would take to make sure he didn’t let me go. G knows what he wants, and he’s never afraid to get it. It might be one of the things I love the most about him.
How They Asked
G and I were long distance for about a year and a half before he graduated and got a job in Atlanta where I was. When I first came to visit him in his hometown of St Louis, he took me to all the typical things- including the famous, beautiful Cathedral Basilica. I thought wow, what a beautiful place to be engaged (haha). Fast forward 3 years, we came to visit his family for a week before a college friend’s wedding in STL. The day before the wedding, we planned to do all our favorite St. Louis things- the cathedral, the arch, the zoo, lunch on the Hill.
For some reason, he was adamant about our time schedule that day. I had a few suspicions but I put it out of my mind. We even joked on the way about how I’d be a lot more nervous if I really thought he was proposing that day.
As we walked up to the cathedral, he stopped me. I couldn’t process what was happening! He told me how he couldn’t imagine spending his life with anyone else and proposed on the steps outside. We took photos and were able to attend mass right after- it was so incredible! The absolute best day of my life.
