Molly and Zach
How We Met
Zach and I have known each other for almost 8 years. He was the manager of the girls’ volleyball team I was on in high school. He was my best friend’s brother’s best friend so I knew him from that too, but I was always too nervous to say more than a few sentences to him because he was a year older and so cute. I knew him as a nice friend but I never thought it would turn into something so much greater. Once we both graduated high school we lost touch and went our separate ways until I got back from studying abroad my junior year. I visited my best friend’s house in December of 2017 when her brother mentioned Zach’s name. I begged her brother to text Zach and tell him I said, hello because I hadn’t talked to him in so long!
The next morning, I woke up to a text from Zach asking me to catch up over dinner. On our first date, we talked for hours and clicked in a way I never thought we would. We talked about our lives, our hopes and dreams, and how we’re both into each other in high school but were shy to get closer. The only odd part was that Zach didn’t eat a single bite during dinner which I later found out was because he was so nervous he thought he was going to throw up! On our next date, we went to the beach in Winter with so many blankets and talked for 5 hours while listening to the ocean. We learned so much about each other this night and realized how similar we are and how quickly our relationship was escalating. Zach then told me about his dad’s diagnosis of ALS and how he takes care of him with his Mom. We spent the next 30 minutes hugging with tears in our eyes.
After comforting one another and connecting on such a close level, we shared our first kiss was while looking up at the stars. Zach played music off of his phone and the song “Thinking out Loud” came on. We kissed right after the lyrics “Kiss me under the light of 1000 stars.” It was my favorite date of ours and from that day we were inseparable and wanted to end up together.
how they asked
Zach’s proposal could not have been more perfect. After I graduated college, we had a trip planned to one of our favorite places – Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. Zach had been coming to Bar Harbor with his family every year since he was four. He took me there for my birthday last year and it was such a wonderful trip. On top of that, when his parents were our age, they also vacationed together in Acadia many times and hiked the very same trails we did! We love the mountains so it was the perfect place for us to explore the beautiful scenery it had to offer.
Acadia really held a special place in our hearts so it’s no wonder this was the place he decided to propose! The first day we got back to Acadia together on May 17, 2018, we decided to do our favorite trail first. The trail was called Beech Cliffs Trail which led to the summit of Beech Mountain. This was the first hike we ever did together and it held many memories for us. The trail is not extremely well known so we were the only ones there, just like the first time we hiked it.
When we summitted the mountain, we found a nice spot to relax with a beautiful view. We sat there with no one else in sight, overlooking Echo Lake and listening to the sounds of nature around us. We spent the next half hour talking about how far we’ve come as a couple and how much we truly love each other. Everything just felt like a fairytale and I remember thinking that there was nowhere else in the world I’d rather be at that moment. I said to Zach, “ I don’t think we could be any closer than we are now,” because we were best friends who knew every detail about each other’s lives. Zach said, “I think we could be a little closer”. I didn’t really think much of it but soon his comment would make all the sense in the world.
We then decided to take a photo together on top of the mountain like we did last time we hiked it. Zach set up our tripod and ran back next to me to pose. Usually, the flash goes off when you set up self-timer, but I didn’t see anything. I turned to Zach and asked him if he had pressed it but he just kept looking at me and couldn’t stop smiling. Tears filled his eyes and he asked me to lay my head on his chest to hear how fast his heart was beating. At that moment I knew what was about to happen and I immediately hugged him and started crying. He got on one knee and said “I love you, Molly. Will you marry me”?
I hugged him and said yes as we both cried tears of joy. It was the best day of my life and it couldn’t have felt more like a dream. I didn’t even look at my ring until 5 minutes later and saw how beautiful it truly was! I was in shock in the best way. We were so full of love and joy at the moment until forever. I found out later on that he had been recording the whole time! Acadia National Park will forever be near and dear to our hearts. We are so happy to spend the rest of our lives together and I couldn’t think of a better way or place to propose.
