How We Met
It all started our senior year, two and a half years ago, when we danced together as two total strangers at a local college bar at Washington State University. I told all my friends that I had met my soul mate that night, but everyone thought I was just being funny. A few days later I took him out to see my horse and the two of us just laid in the grass talking while she grazed in the field. We talked so long that we lost track of the time and it was dark when we left.
I remember dropping him off that evening and thinking, “am I crazy, how is this happening to me?” I am a pretty realistic person and I never thought that I would be able to fall for someone as fast as I did. I couldn’t wait to be around him again, and I was just praying that he felt the same way too. From that weekend on, we were inseparable. We both graduated that year and he moved with me to my hometown in Bellingham Washington.
how they asked
On our third Christmas together I was praying for a proposal. When he didn’t pop the big question, I started to wonder if I was crazy, or jumping in to this too fast. The day after Christmas we went on a hike, ended up getting lost, and hiked an extra six miles more than the four we expected, then it started dumping snow! Cold, wet, tired and hungry, we kept on until we made it to the top of the mountain. We pulled off to the side of the trail and set up our hammock so we could grab a snack and warm up for a second. We were happily squished together eating our picnic food reminiscing on the events of our day and how it wouldn’t be us if the hike had gone any other way. As we were packing up to leave, he said that he had something else he wanted to ask me. He pulled a ring out of his backpack and got down on one knee while I stayed sitting in the hammock, I knew what was coming but I still couldn’t believe until he asked… “Molly, Will you marry me?” I shouted “YES!!!” and we stood alone in the beautiful snowy woods, hugging each other and crying out of happiness.
Everything we had been complaining about was forgotten. We couldn’t stop smiling on our walk back, we just kept looking up at each other, wondering if that had all just really happened! It’s not your usual romantic proposal story. It’s just a story about a boy and a girl who love each other enough to power through horrendous conditions with big smiles on our faces, helping each other along the way. Which is what marriage is all about to begin with. I am so excited to spend the rest of my life with a man who brings out the best in me, helps me laugh at the situations that should tear me down, and loves me unconditionally through all aspects of life. Every day I wonder how I got so lucky to have found him. And every day I work hard to be the best person I can be, for him.
