How We Met
Erik and I were born and raised in the same town, even attended the same middle school, yet had never met each other until March 2016. Both of us moved away for college, but as we began our careers, we found ourselves back in our hometown again with our families. After joining a local young professionals group, we both got involved in our community and ended up meeting for the first time at an early morning community service event. The event was a clean-up of the botanical gardens Erik and I had grown up near. While we worked to clear out the brush in the gardens and dodged poison ivy, Erik and I got to know each other. It was so easy and comfortable that it felt as if we’d known each other for a long time. I remember not wanting the morning to end. After the clean-up, as we were walking back to our cars, Erik (very non-chalantly) said “Well, time for breakfast!” Not thinking anything of it, I said “Oh, where are you headed?” Erik very quickly named a local breakfast spot and said “You wanna go?” I accepted his invitation and was so excited that I completely missed the turn for the restaurant as I was driving there. Erik sped up along side me, rolled down his window, and said “Follow me” as he laughed and re-directed me back to the restaurant. I had always thought Erik was planning on going to breakfast alone that day and just happened to casually invite me. He later told me that he never goes to breakfast by himself, he just wanted a reason to spend more time with me. Since that day, Erik and I have realized time and time again how blessed we are to have found each other and that even though it took us so long to finally meet, it was the most perfect timing either of us could have hoped for.
how they asked
Erik and I planned a trip to California with friends and the first stop was San Francisco. On our first day in San Francisco, we wanted to explore all of the popular attractions and Golden Gate Bridge was at the top of the list. I had hoped Erik might propose on this trip, but when I saw that there appeared to be nothing in his pockets besides his phone and wallet that morning, I was certain it wouldn’t happen. After a great morning and afternoon of exploring San Francisco, we found our way to the beach near Crissy Field. The view of the bridge was beautiful from there! Erik asked if he could grab his sunglasses out of my purse, so I handed it to him and walked away to scope out a good spot on the beach for a picture. Erik walked up to me, our friends got out their cameras, and we began to pose as we would for any other picture. All of a sudden, Erik was on one knee and I was somewhere between happy tears, giggles, and “Yes!” Afterwards, I asked Erik where he had kept the ring the entire day – as it turned out, he had hidden it in my purse! I was walking around for hours with my engagement ring in my purse and I had no idea! I’m still in shock that everything worked out so perfectly that day, but at the same time, it’s not so surprising because since the day Erik and I met everything has fallen into place just like it was meant to be.
