Mishale and Niraj
how we met
Mishale and I have known of each other since middle school. I always thought she was beautiful but we had different groups of friends. As the years passed, we started to hang out with mutual friends and as a result, I saw more and more of her. However I never really made any moves, and any moves I did make were never recognized as such by Mishale. Ultimately, I thought she wasn’t interested and gave up my pursuit. As I went off to college at UMBC and Mishale went to college in Boston, our paths led us in different directions. In my mind, Mishale was always the girl who got away. It wasn’t until Mishale returned from college for an internship did our love story start. When she came back home, I knew it was now or never. I essentially stalked her on AIM and every opportunity I had to message her, I would do it. Even then, I don’t think Mishale thought much of it.
As New Years 2008 approached, a group of us decided on a night out in Washington D.C. I knew this was it, I was going to make my move and get a midnight kiss from Mishale. As the clock struck midnight, with the help of some liquid courage, I leaned in and to my surprise, Mishale didn’t back away! It was the perfect night and the start of an incredible journey. As we shared numerous dates, trips, stories and laughs, I fell more and more in love with her. I was learning everyday how amazing Mishale is. I knew she was the one and I knew I was never going to let her go. She didn’t make it easy at first, but I am happy to say that she is no longer the one that got away.
how they asked
A week or two before Thanksgiving, Niraj suggested that we plan a “D.C. Day” on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend and do some touristy activities to take advantage of what Washington, D.C. has to offer, right on our doorstep! So whenever Niraj and I take a trip, I am known to be the planner – meaning I typically create a detailed itinerary for each day, carefully planned using Google Maps. We had recently come back from Napa Valley/San Francisco (which I planned) so Niraj told me that he would plan our “D.C. Day”, to leave everything up to him and the only thing I needed to worry about was to be on time! I was a little shocked but I went with it!
So Saturday morning came, and our first stop was in Eastern Market. For breakfast, he had found a great food truck where we picked up some crepes and coffee before our tour of the U.S. Capitol. During the middle of our tour, my brother texted me to say that he and my family were planning to go to a local winery later on that day because his friend had given him some passes as he was unable to go. My brother asked if Niraj and I wanted to come and I told him that I would discuss it with Niraj, since I know he had planned a full day’s worth of activities. Niraj left the decision up to me as he knew that I wanted to spend some time with my youngest brother who was in town for the holidays. We decided that we would meet them after we toured the Library of Congress and grabbed lunch in the city. On our way back to the car, we walked through Eastern Market, browsing through artwork, jewelry, scarves, and I picked up a winter hat because it was so windy. We had almost reached the Big Cork winery when my brother called to tell us that the tour had already started but we can just meet them in the vineyard.
We park the car and start walking aimlessly (or so I thought) over to the vineyards – I’m walking at a quicker pace because I don’t want to miss the “tour”. We were walking in the middle of one of the aisles of the vineyard when Niraj says to stop here.
I’m confused because I’m wondering where this “tour” is, and before I realize it, Niraj takes my hands and begins to tell me how much I meant to him. He got down on one knee and asked me to be his forever.
I said yes, he spins me around, and I see our families and closest friends walking/running towards us! After the proposal, we drank some amazing wine at this gorgeous winery.
It was just so picturesque with the mountains in the background. We then drove back to my house where we all had dinner together. I am so blessed to be able to have shared this moment with people who mean the most in the world to me – I couldn’t have imagined it any other way. Niraj definitely took planning to another level!
