How We Met
Matt and I have one of those classic “how we met stories” because well..met in high school! I was the new girl and instantly had a huge crush on him. But it wasn’t until the tenth grade that we became friends. I loved his smile, his blue eyes and how he would always say hi to me when we passed by in the halls. We had a few classes together and became “study partners” but it really was just a chance to hangout with him since we had different friend groups. A few weeks before my sixteenth birthday, just as Christmas break was approaching, Matt asked if I wanted to come to the movies with him and another couple (double date!).
Of course, I said yes. Word got around that we were going on a date together and I was oblivious to the fact that everyone knew he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend (I was just happy to be on my first date ever!). Matt was so nervous! I was too but beyond excited. I honestly don’t remember much of the movie. I was just really happy that his super cute guy who I had finally been getting to know, just asked me to be his girlfriend. Skip ahead five and a half years later we are best friends and totally in love. I’m so happy to have him.
how they asked
In celebration of our 5 year anniversary, Matt drove us to Vancouver on a cold, but breathtaking winter morning. He told me to make sure I was bundled up for where we were going. This was the first time he had planned a BIG surprise for our celebration so I was even more intrigued. The drive to Vancouver was beautiful and I tried to think of what he could possibly have planned. When we showed up at the Vancouver Airport I was even more shocked because showing up here was not what I had expected. I even panicked (where were we going?). Turns out, Matt booked us a private helicopter tour of Vancouver and the mountains. After meeting the extremely kind owner and our amazing pilot, getting into the helicopter was really happening. “Excited?” I heard Matt say through the headset I was wearing. “Yes!” I exclaimed but I was almost feeling speechless.
Floating above a beautiful city, in the middle of winter with a horizon of snow filled mountains and the morning sun just peaking through the clouds-I was wishing this moment could last forever. Matt held this steady, extremely happy smile that was so contagious, I couldn’t stop smiling either. We were so happy. After an hour of exploring the city, the mountains filled with skiers and snowboarders and the beautiful homes hidden along the cliffs and ocean shoreline, our tour came to an end. To me, this day already could not get any better.
During the time we spent up in the air we got to know our pilot pretty well. He asked if he could take a couple more pictures of us after landing. Smiling into my iPhone camera I was hoping my expression was showing just how excited I was feeling on the inside. Matt at one point was shuffling a lot and unzipping his jacket. I remember asking him “Is everything okay?” He turned, facing me, with a small black box in his hand. I think my heart stopped beating for a second. At this point he was down on one knee. He told me that he was luckiest guy in the world and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. “Miranda, will you marry me?” he asked.
“Yes!” (A thousand times yes!) I said as I reached out my left hand to him so he could put on the ring (the most beautiful ring I had ever seen). Matt laughed and told me that I still had to take my glove off in order for him to actually put the ring on.
I tore that glove off as fast as could. Our awesome pilot, who was still watching and still snapping pictures of us, was hollering and laughing and telling us to kiss (again, and again!).
We thanked him for everything (they had helped Matt set up the proposal). But soon we were all embracing with a group hug-he told us that all of this joy and happiness made his day. It was another one of those moments that I wished could have lasted forever. But the best part of a proposal is the promise of forever! Forever moments (like this one) with the person I love the most.
