How we met: When I was 16 I was working at a local Italian Ice shop called Rita’s. I loved working there and I had a blast. One night this very cute boy came in with his mom and he had Band-Aids all over his face. Being the tactful person that I am, I asked him why he had them all over his face to which his mother began to explain to his embarrassment. I remember thinking how cute he was, but when he came in a few weeks later with his girlfriend I figured that was the end of that little crush.
A little while later I started attending a local church with my twin sister and a dear friend that I worked with called Trinity Fellowship. It must have been in the cards for us, because low and behold he went to school there and also started attending. He really liked me and I really liked him, but I was much more shy than he was. He would come to Rita’s and help me take in all of the umbrellas at night because they were very heavy. One night he leaned in and kissed me! I was so shocked I just kind of freaked out!!
We went on a few fun dates and just a few weeks later he asked me to be his girlfriend under a big oak tree in a park. Only 2 months later he gave me a promise ring under that same oak tree.
how they asked: After 5 and a half wonderful years of dating… I was really ready to move forward and I could tell he was too. I had a feeling it was coming, but he really threw me off when he asked me.
I was getting off work on a Thursday when I called Philip and told him I was headed to the gym for my daily workout. Then at 5:30 I had planned on meeting my friend Savanah, (his brother’s girlfriend) to get our nails done because we were going to Disney World that Saturday. When I walked in the nail salon the lady kept asking me if this little sign was mine, and I kept telling her “no”. Then Savanah told me to read it, the sign said “Have fun getting your nails done, when you’re done come by my place and see what’s there”. He even paid the nail tech ahead of time for me, so that I did not have to pay anything. At this point I had a strong hunch at what was about to go down, but I was ticked because I was wearing my nasty gym clothes and sweaty.
Savanah kindly reassured me that it was going to be fine and after my deluxe mani/pedi we headed to his place. When we got there no one was home, but there was an outfit that I loved and another sweet sign laying on his bed. It said ” meet me where I gave you the first ring, under the pink trees”. I quickly changed, curled my hair, reapplied my makeup, and we were off!
I kept my eyes closed the entire drive there since it was just down the street and when I got there I saw him standing under these beautiful cherry blossom trees. They were blooming and it looked like pink snow flakes had fallen all over the ground making it look so beautiful, like something out of a fairy tale.
I accidentally went the wrong way at first (classic Mindy) and had to be redirected to where his brother sweetly gave me a bunch of roses and told me, “This is your acceptance to our family.”
I began to cry and as I walked the wrong way, yet again, and was directed the right way. I felt like I was truly in a Disney story. He cried – which is so sweet – and told me how much he loved me, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him.
After we took a few photos and then dashed down the road to dinner at one of the first restaurants he had ever taken me to where both of our families were waiting to celebrate with us.
I have loved this man since the day I met him, and I am so happy to be engaged to my best friend.
