how they met

One Tuesday, both Mike and Will separately decided to spend the evening at the San Antonio Museum of Art, Will with his parents and Mike with a college friend. Both strolled the galleries, enjoying the traveling exhibit which focused on the art of ancient Egypt. Mike noticed a very attractive stranger looking at him from across the hall, who seemed slowly to move closer, artifact by artifact. Mike’s friend, meanwhile, had to leave, but left Mike to absorb the rest of the exhibit. Eventually Will and Mike were standing side by side looking at a book of transcribed hieroglyphs. “Wouldn’t it be great to be able to read that?” said Mike. The conversation started, and soon Will asked Mike out for coffee.

how they asked

Five years and two months later, Mike and Will were again at the museum, this time for a date night which was being given to Mike as a Christmas gift. It was to include a visit to the art museum, drinks at a downtown bar, and dinner at a restaurant nearby. Mike joyfully clung to Will, and asked “which gallery are we going to see this time?” Will, without pause, answered “Egyptian!” And so they arrived at a set of reliefs from the New Kingdom.

As they admired a detail of paint on the reliefs, Will dropped to one knee, and Mike noticed a girl who had been sitting on a nearby bench stand up with a camera. “Five years ago we met at this museum, and you said ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could read this?'” At this point, Mike was speechless (a rare occurrence in his life), and when Will reached the part where he said “I’d like to spend the rest of my life with you. Michael, will you marry me?”, his only response could be “Absolutely.”
