How We Met
I moved from London, Ontario to a small town with my family, which is where I met Tyson. I was a new, nervous grade 10 student in the high school, and didn’t know many people. It was a new transition to start at a new high school, but Tyson made going to school so much more exciting. His crooked smile caught my eye in our high school halls, and I have been hooked on him ever since. It actually took us a while to finally talk to each other, since we both were so shy! I didn’t know his name, and he didn’t know mine, all I knew was we couldn’t stop staring and smiling at each other in the hallway! So finally, I had to find out who he was. I asked my good friend at the time, mustered up the courage, pushed through the butterflies, and “accidentally’ bumped into him in the hallway. Well, it worked! We finally started talking, became very good friends, and started dating when i was 15, and he was 17 (Young love, I know!)
how they asked
It was one week after our 5th year anniversary, and I had just completed my nursing semester’s final exams. Therefore, Tyson had planned a relaxing weekend for me at home! Our Saturday was planned for fishing, visiting our parents, and a bonfire later that night, which was a perfect way to unwind. We had spent the whole day together with family, and just started to cook dinner. Tyson said he needed to slip out to get some mail, and run a few errands (I never thought anything of it)! His mom and I were cooking dinner, and then she stopped me, and handed me a sealed letter, said that it was for me, and i had to open it now! I was confused, and had no idea what was going on! I opened the letter and the first thing it said was “My beautiful Mikayla, the moment I laid eyes on you I knew that i wanted to spend the rest of my life with you” Then, I knew exactly what was happening, and then began the water works! (I am a serious crier). The end of the letter instructed his mom to drive me to where we went on dates in high school, and where he asked me to be his girlfriend. So, we hopped into the car and drove to Walkerton’s bend park.
When i got there, at the park sign there was the first candle, and under it was a note. The note stated some short and sweet things about what he loved about me,
“You are the most beautiful girl, I love your smile, your laugh, your positive personality”
“You are my better half, and have always brought out the best in me”
“You support me through everything, and are always there for me”
“I can not wait to spend the rest of my life with you”
On the way, there were more candles and at each one there was a bible verse regarding love, and marriage. Tyson and I have always incorporated God into our relationship, and both share the same faith, so this was really special to me. At the other candles there were notes about us, our bright future together, and reminiscing about our relationship!
I was then instructed to walk down the trail which was lined with candles in jars, two straw bales with Jackson-Triggs placed on top, and drinking glasses. Then, I saw him, standing there nervously waiting, and its safe to say my heart skipped a beat. There he was, with that crooked smile I fell in love with, and our golden retriever named Allie with a sign around her neck saying “Will you marry my dad?”
Then, in the exact same spot he asked me to be his girlfriend 5 years ago, and got down on one knee. He looked up at me smiling, while i sobbed like a baby! He explained how much he loved me, and the significance of our relationship. He then reached in his back pocket, pulled out a little blue box, opened it and revealed the most beautiful ring I have ever seen, it was just perfect. He looked up at me with his big brown eyes, and asked me to marry him. And of course I said YES!
Tyson’s brother, and his sister in-law were there to share this moment with us (She took the pictures), and we were so thankful for that! After LOTS of hugs, kisses, tears, laughs, and more we headed to our families to share the big news. That evening was filled with many phone calls to our loved ones who were thrilled about our engagement. It was the best night of my life surrounded by friends and family ! We are such a family orientated couple, and I am so incredibly happy that they were such a big part of our day.
The next morning I woke up with the greatest view, a ring on my finger! Reminding me of the beautiful future ahead with my favourite person.
I can not explain the feeling that I had when he asked me to be his wife, it was like everything I had been waiting for. It was an amazing feeling, and I will never in my life forget that moment. Within all the years Tyson and I have been together we have fallen in love so passionately, and he has become my the biggest part of my life, my closest friend, and my kindred spirit. He gets me. We get each other. He is the most amazing person I have ever met, and I am so blessed to have him. I can not wait to marry the love of my life, and my lifelong BESTFRIEND.
