How We Met
Greg and I have been together for a little over four and a half years now. From the moment we got together we just clicked. It is funny to say that you can kiss someone once and know you are going to spend the rest of your life with them, but this is exactly what happened to me with Greg. In the beginning of our relationship everything just made sense and it was so easy to get a long. We had so much in common and so many coincidences growing up so close to each other. Greg and I met while we were both away in law school in Lansing, Michigan. As fate would have it we would meet about 700 miles away from home in Michigan but be able to come home together. I live in Staten Island and he lives in Brooklyn Greg graduated a year before I did so after dating for only a month, he returned home. For the next 4 months I remained in Michigan and he was in Brooklyn. Even though I thought this would be hard, all the nights we stayed on the phone for 3 hours and more, I believe were the foundation to our relationship. We learned so much about each other and I missed him every second I was still in Michigan. Luckily in December 2012 I came home and we were finally able to start our life together in a normal routine.
how they asked
On March 18, 2017, Greg was taking out for my 30th birthday. My birthday plans were a surprise so I didn’t ask because I love surprises. He told me we were going to an early diner and then we had tickets for the next event of the night. We started the night at an early dinner at a Thai restaurant on Montague street in Brooklyn. After dinner we had to walk on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to get to the next location.
As we were walking on the Promenade and it was lightly raining, I asked Greg if we were going on a boat since it was the only thing that made sense to me as to why we were on the Promenade which he replied uhh yea, we’re getting on a boat. As we were walking down the Promenade there was no one in sight except for two people taking pictures.
I did not think anything of it since it is a great location to take photos rain or shine. Greg said to me what are these people doing, are they taking pictures of us and I said of course they aren’t. Just ask we walked past the two people, Greg asked me to hold our umbrella. As I turned around to grab the umbrella, my love was on one knee and said, “Baby will you marry me?”
I don’t think I could put in words how happy I was. I could not take my eyes off of him and was trying to engrave every second of it in my mind. It s something we have spoken about for so long and all I could think is, I finally get to marry this man.
I finally realized that the photographers were there for us (amazing job by my fiance hiring a professional photographer… he knows me so well that these pictures would make me so happy) I remained in shock and Greg finally told me to call my mother. I called my mother screaming “WE’RE ENGAGED!” She told me to meet her at my uncle’s cafe that was not too far because she was there and wanted to see us and of course my beautiful ring. We hopped in an Uber and made our way there.
As I tried calling the rest of my family members, no one was picking up. All I could think was i have the most important news and no one is picking up their phones! lol When we arrived at the cafe, my heart stopped. I walked in to see about 60 of my closest family members and friends all there to surprise me! As if the proposal was not enough, my mother and family threw me a Surprise 30th Birthday party! It was the most beautiful party and I found myself just sitting back and starring at everyone and everything.
Every detail of the party was so beautiful and perfect. I was so over joyed and touched to have everyone I loved be there to celebrate mine and Greg’s engagement and of course my birthday. In a half hour I had become engaged and walked into a surprise party. This was not the end. I call this the cherry on top. As I was hugging everyone and showing them the gorgeous ring my fiance had made, my mother tells me to close my eyes.
I said please I don’t think my heart can take anymore. I open my eyes to see my best friend from law school and her boyfriend who I also went to law school with and who I have not seen in 4 years standing in front of me all the way from Colorado. And cue the tears again. 30 suddenly did not seem that bad. To say this was the happiest day of my life, to date would be an understatement. I could not be any happier to marry the man of my dreams!
