How We Met
Ben and I met in July 2016 – at work! This was my first job out of college and he had been working there for several years in a different department. Ben is 7 years older than me, so I didn’t think I had much of a chance with him, however, I secretly gushed to all my friends about my “work crush.” I even remember telling my mom about this “cute tall guy” that I worked with. Eventually, after finding every unnecessary excuse to stop by his desk or send him an email with a smiley face, we finally became friends. Soon enough, our friendship turned into a relationship… which then turned into an engagement.
How They Asked
On November 17, 2016, Ben was on a golf trip in Pinehurst, NC. That night, he wandered outside of his hotel and sat on a bench. From that bench, he decided to call me and he confessed his feelings for me and asked me if I would go on a date with him. After that night, the rest was history. Even though we were co-workers at the time, we always joke that our relationship got started in Pinehurst.
On November 10, 2018, Ben took me to Pinehurst because he tricked me into thinking his parents were coming down from Ohio for a golf and spa weekend. Before we left for Pinehurst, he took me to lunch at the place we had our first date and then to get a manicure and pedicure. This raised my suspicions a little bit, but he’s always doing sweet things for me, so I wasn’t sure if this was significant or not. As we arrived in Pinehurst, I was told we were meeting his parents outside their hotel so we could go to dinner together.
When we arrived at the hotel, I looked around the parking lot and didn’t see any cars with an Ohio license plate. I brushed it off and got out of the car to meet up with his mom and dad. As we “waited outside for his parents,” Ben suggested we sit on a bench by the front door. While we were sitting, he asked me if I knew the significance of this bench. I had no idea at the time, but Ben explained that this was the bench that he was sitting on when he called me for the first time. Before I knew it, Ben was down on one knee asking me to marry him while I was sitting on the bench that started it all.
After a quick surprise photoshoot from our friend/photographer, Ben explained to me that he made dinner reservations at a nearby steakhouse for an intimate celebration dinner for two. When we walked into the restaurant, I was surprised to see both our families waiting at a table for our arrival! It was so nice to celebrate with all our loved ones who traveled a long way to be with us.
I couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect night… let the wedding planning begin!
