How We Met
Johnathon and I have been dating for 3 years, roughly 1,120 days according to John’s count. We met at our church in Honolulu, Hawaii and have known each other for 2 years before we started dating. John would always talk to me at church about music. We would connect over our favorite musicians, singers, the concerts we would go to and it some how always became a competition on who could be the first to show the other the newest music. We became closer friends the year we served as Camp staff for our church’s summer youth camp. Our relationship started as the best of friends. We have served together on a mission trip, supported each other as we started new businesses, wrote songs together, served at church together, he helped me move 4 times in one year, we’ve been to concerts together, Disneyland together, and sledding on the snow together. We have shared so many wonderful experiences together. John is someone who makes me laugh, someone I’ve been able to enjoy life with and he is always down for a new adventure. One of the first things we did as friends was take personality tests and when he read me the quote on his test results, I just knew it.
“It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.”
I believe our relationship started in God’s perfect timing for each of our lives. Being together has brought out the best in both of us, and has also brought us closer to God and to each other.
how they asked
It was a beautiful night on Thursday, October 5th. A Harvest Moon lit the whole sky of Honolulu Hawaii. John came over to my parents house that night and asked for my hand in marriage, both of my hands to be exact. Funny story; when my parents got engaged my Dad asked my Papa (my Grandfather) for my Mom’s ‘hand’ in marriage. My Papa’s response was “You only want one hand?” Johnathon talked to my Papa and asked for advice on how to ask my parents for my hand in marriage, his response to Johnathon was, “make sure to ask for both hands”. LOL
As John asked my parents for my hand in marriage, I was moved to tears! My parents promised us their love, support and prayers as we start our new journey together. In that moment I felt so much love, not only from Johnathon, but also from my parents. They said a beautiful prayer over us, and sent us on our way! At that point, I had NO I idea what was going to happen! In order to keep me surprised, I was pillow cased!! I was ‘pillow cased’ because I didn’t want to be blindfolded and mess up my eye lashes, which was pretty much hopeless, since I had been crying. John agreed I could drape a pillow case over my head as we drove to the secret location.
During the car ride John asked me to promise him I wouldn’t peek. I could tell he little nervous and excited because his driving, along with not being able to see, was making me car sick! We reached the location and he guided me out of the car. I could hear music playing in the distance as he lead me to the beach. Mariah Carey’s “Without You” was playing as he removed the pillow case to reveal the most beautiful sight.
There’s nothing like a full moon on the beaches of Hawaii! The location was on the beach, a Harvest Moon, Waikiki and Diamond Head in the distance, and a beautiful aisle with dozens of white, pink and red roses! Again, I was moved to tears. He lead me down the aisle and allowed the perfect, magical moment to sink in. He asked if he could read me something he wrote. Right as he began to read the letter the song “My Heart Will Go On” began to play. Now don’t get me wrong, I love some Celine, but I stopped him and said “Wait! You gotta change the song!” We both starting looking for the bluetooth speaker and iphone in the sand to switch songs! Phew… Okay song skipped. Back to the moment! lol
Johnathon wrote me the sweetest love letter. As he ended with “Melodie Cheri Zepeda, I promise to love you and stand by you, to support you and walk with you” he dropped to his knee and said, “Will You Marry Me?”
We sat down on the beach and John prayed for us and our new journey.
Friends and family joined us after! Even our friend/Photographer was hiding under the life guard station shooting the whole proposal as it happened!
