Melissa and Robert

How We Met

Robert and I met in middle school. We both attended a very small private school in Miami, Florida. I remember the first day of 6th grade when Robert walked in. I remember it so clearly, because my best friend had a huge crush on him. The school years went by, we all got close within our group of about 7 friends. Every weekend we would all hangout and my friend’s crush grew. I never thought Robert was attractive or even cute. Time went by and after a while, the group separated. Years down the road, I was now 22 when I another one of my best friends asked me to go to his house for a party. I was dating someone else at the time and convinced him to go with me to the party. When I arrived, I saw Robert. It had been over 5 years since I had seen or spoken to him. I asked my best friend JC to reintroduce us because I did not think he would recognize me. Well, the joke was on me, because he did recognize me. Right away he gave me a big hug and we started talking. We spent the night catching up and playing games with the rest of the party. About a week later, my ex and I broke up (the relationship had honestly been over for quite a while). On a whim, very much unlike me, I text Robert. Next thing I knew, JC, Robert and I were going out for a drink. That night, Robert asked me if it would be ok for him to text me and go out on a date.

We began talking every day. He and I had agreed that we would just casually date since we had just ended our previous relationships. God thought that was a funny joke and we had no idea what was in store for us. Slowly but surely, day after day, we spoke, went out and got closer than he and I could have ever imagined. The first time he kissed me, we had all gone out on a group date and ended up at the beach. He asked me if I wanted to separate and go on a walk with him down the beach. As we were walking, he asked if it would be weird if he kissed me. I laughed and said no. As I began to walk away, just like a movie, he grabbed my arm, spun me around and gave me the best kiss I had ever received.

Melissa and Robert's Engagement in Epcot - Walt Disney World

A few months went by and I picked up Robert for a date at our usual spot parked by the water. As we sat out there on the rocks, he took off his jacket and was wearing a Disney shirt that said “I’ll Be Your Mickey”. I knew there was a matching shirt but I did not want to look stupid and react without him asking. He pulled out my shirt and with a cute and nervous smile, asked me to be his girlfriend. We’ve made it through long distance for a year and half while I was getting my Master’s at Auburn University, we have a little puppy together who is now 3 years old, have lived together for a year now and well, the rest is history!

Proposal Ideas Epcot - Walt Disney World

how they asked

Every year for my birthday I love to plan a trip with family and friends to go to Epcot and enjoy the Food and Wine Festival that always begins around the time of my birthday. This year, I had planned it and more friends than ever were ready to go on this trip. I was very excited to say the least. My closest friends had made it, Robert’s dad, step mom and sister, one of my sisters… this was going to be a very fun trip.

The morning of September 29th, 2018 comes around and I was so excited to begin eating and drinking around the world. We got to the park, got the tickets for those who needed them and began walking towards the World Showcase. Epcot is a special place for us because we have a lot of happy memories there and it was the location where I first told Robert that I loved him. We walked passed Spaceship Earth and were next to the fountain when I spot a friend of mine that we were planning to meet up with. I ask the group if that was her and they all reply yes. All of a sudden, I see my father. My father has not stepped foot in a Disney park in years. I then look to his right and notice my baby sister who lives in Maryland. I come to a complete stop. But then not knowing what to do, I slowly walk forward. Before I know it, I hear Robert’s voice say, “you can’t go too far”. In that moment I knew. I slowly turned around and saw the love of my life, bended knee on a gorgeous day next to a beautiful fountain. As I slowly walk to him, tears began to fill my eyes.

He smiles, looks at me and says, “I thought I would be able to say something, but yeah, I can’t” and opens the box and says those beautiful words I had been waiting 4 long years for, “Will you marry me?”. Of course I said yes and everyone around us began to cheer. Strangers stopped and when we finished hugging I see that his mom had surprised me as well. Everyone had made it.

My sister and best friend pulled out Bride/Groom shirts, ears, koozies for us and everyone and they even set up photos with Disney photographers. What I thought was going to be a birthday celebration turned out to be one of the best days of my life and a moment that I will never forget.
