How We Met
Nik and I met through a mutual friend at a birthday party in 2011, but at the time I was in a relationship. Our paths crossed again a few months later when I started working at the same company as him. This time I was single. We began talking and went on a few casual dates here and there, but there were no sparks just yet. He was very persistent, and I was very stubborn. One afternoon I was walking through the employee parking lot after my shift ended and found him stranded with a flat tire. I offered to let him use my AAA account and then waited with him until everything was fixed and good to go. He thanked me and we went our separate ways for the evening. While driving home I received a text message from him thanking me again and asking me what I was doing later that night. I responded with something about cleaning my apartment. His exact reply was, “Well when you’re done with that, let me take you out and buy you a drink and flirt with you”. It was so straight forward that all I could think was “Well, why not?”, and so I agreed. After that night, we became quite inseparable, and quite in love. I am forever grateful for his persistence and for not giving up on me. I have never been so happy.
how they asked
“Let’s take Gaia to the dog beach on Sunday”, Nik said.
I’m always down for taking our pup out for some fun, so of course, I agreed. Nik then added on to the plans saying that Roland, his best friend, would be meeting us there and that we would go to Wonderland, a bar in Ocean Beach, to watch the rest of Sunday night football afterwards. I thought the whole scenario was a little unusual because I was working that day until 6, which seemed late for the dog beach, and Nik and I usually take Gaia out on days when we both have work off. I went with it because sometimes Nik likes to be spontaneous. I rushed home from work and changed out of my work clothes as quickly as possible so we could make it to the beach while there was still some light out.
We arrived with plenty of time and met up with Roland. After walking around for about 15 minutes, Nik wanted to head back to the parking lot but suggested that we walk along the water, rather than higher up through the sand. By this time, the sunset was starting to get absolutely gorgeous. I mean, the sky looked like it was on fire. While walking, a small dog approached me and I knelt down to give it some love. As it ran off, I stood up and looked over at Nik. Our dog caught my eye as she was running towards me with this large, wooden, blue heart hanging around her neck. The front read “Open me” and inside it said, “MJ… Will you marry me?” My gaze returned to Nik where he was already on one knee with the ring in his hands and a huge smile on his face.
My immediate reaction was to run to him, and holding back tears, I said yes! After he put the ring on my finger, he told me to look over to my right. My entire family was standing there and had witnessed the whole thing! At that point I officially lost it and I couldn’t stop the tears from coming down my face . I could not have imagined a more perfect proposal for the two of us!
