How We Met
Jordan and I met in a bakery, in Brooklyn, right after Thanksgiving in 2016. He has ever since been the one I am most thankful for. We sat an talked over baked goods and five hours, three cups of tea, one chocolate cupcake, and a mini-cheesecake later, we sang karaoke at a nearby bar (he killed with “Forget About Dre” and I sang a little Celine Dion) and he dropped me off at home with a kiss.
The next day, he called and asked me out for that night, too.
How They Asked
It was the worst start to a day: we were moving out of the first apartment we chose together, moving boxes and furniture up–and then down–five flights of stairs, and our landlord was being really difficult. We were officially moved out by now but still needed to do a final walk-through with our curmudgeonly landlord so we decided to ride our bikes over to the apartment and then, no matter how poorly the walk-through went, make a day of it! We were going to bike through all of our favorite neighborhood memories; Brooklyn Bridge Park, Smith Street, the first place I fell when Jordan taught me how to ride a bike, where I would pick up treats at the Farmers Market, the paper store, the kitchen store, and our very favorite–the Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain, home of the old fashioned ice cream.
As we biked, the day got infinitely better. We were laughing and singing and–despite the random dust-storm, we filled our bellies and hearts with enough memories to hold in both hands. Then we biked to the Brooklyn Farmacy, where we always order the most insane concoctions. On this day, we went crazy and fell into a chocolate coma. As we headed out of the shop, we paused to take it all in and sat on the bench by the window. Jordan started singing one of my favorite songs, “Somebody Loved” by The Weepies, softly, just so I could hear. I didn’t think much of it, because we often find ourselves singing to each other and, by the time he got to the chorus, I was singing along with him.
Before I could even wrap my head around what was going on–got down on one knee and ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM!!!
The first words out of my mouth were, “Is this real!?!” followed quickly after by a resounding “YES!!!” I have never been so sure of anything in my entire life.
It was the worst start to a day but it quickly turned into the best day ever!!
