Melissa and Andrew

How We Met

Andrew and I met the first day of my freshman year of high school in orchestra class, of all places. He was a sophomore so he was naturally a little bit more talkative and outgoing during class introductions. We became friends during that first semester of school, but as we got further into the year it was pretty obvious that we were both interested in something more.

Being as young as we were, both of us were too shy to ask for the others number so I asked my friend to give him my number (so high school, I know). Andrew called me a few days later and asked me to go to lunch with him and his brother, ya know because we were both too young to have a drivers license. Our first date was on December 22, 2009, and we’ve been together ever since. 3 proms, 2 high school graduations, 1 year of long-distance, two college graduations, and 8 1/2 years later we’re planning our wedding!

how they asked

His proposal was perfect. We both attended college at Appalachian State University in the mountains of North Carolina, so Boone has always been a special place for us. During college, almost every Friday Andrew and I would get coffee and drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway–looking at the scenery and talking about friends, life, school, and (a personal favorite of mine) our future together. We took that same 45-minute drive for 3 years worth of Fridays, always trying to make it to Thunder Hill in time for the sunset. Because this was such a tradition for us, it was no surprise when Andrew suggested taking that same Friday afternoon drive when we were taking a weekend trip to Boone. Even though we’ve only been out of college for a little over a year, that Friday parkway drive brought back so many happy memories and ended at our favorite spot just in time for the sunset, Thunder Hill.

When we arrived at Thunder Hill we just *happened* to run into my best friend, Elizabeth, who also happens to be a photographer. Elizabeth just so *happened* to have her camera with her and offered to take a picture of the two us as the sun was going down. I’m a sucker for good pictures so I happily obliged. Elizabeth snapped one picture of Andrew and I standing side-by-side and then before I knew it he was getting down on one knee and proposing. I was completely surprised, but I couldn’t have picked a more meaningful place or time. To put the icing on the cake, April 27th, the day Andrew proposed, is also my parent’s wedding anniversary.

Friday afternoon parkway drives and sunsets will always be our thing.
