How We Met

This was my first ever, not a surprise proposal to photograph! Meaning, that it was totally modern and untraditional. Emily and Brian knew they wanted to marry each other and wanted the moment they dedicated to this decision documented.

How They Asked

As soon as we met in person, they told me Brian wouldn’t be taking a knee to ask for Emily’s hand in marriage. This was a joint decision, and every action of theirs was intentional and well thought out.

They’ve been working remotely, so they were on a road trip from their home in San Francisco and based themselves in Port Angeles for the week. Their ideal setting for the proposal was a wildflower meadow with mountain views — Sound of Music-type vibes — and just what the Olympics are known for.

We started the shoot by wandering around, and I loved that Emily and Brian immediately started joking around and playing on boulders. After a while, they changed outfits and I let them know that I’d give them space and privacy whenever they wanted to propose to one another.

I had a particular shot in mind, them wandering down a path together, and it led to the spot I was hoping they’d feel inclined to propose. The timing was perfect. The sun was beginning to set, golden hour was upon us, and as I hoped, they let me know that it was time!

I stood back, giving them as much privacy as possible, and watched them exchange words. Brian gave Emily his great-grandmother’s ring, and when they were finished, they turned and gazed up at the mountains together. What an incredible place to start a new chapter of life together!

Afterward, we took a few more photos as the sun dropped into the ocean and watched the sky change colors as we got back to the cars. Deer roamed around and the sky kept getting pinker. It was one of the more peaceful sunsets I’ve ever experienced.
