How We Met
Sam and I have known each other for about 15 years. We met when I was 10 years old, he was 13. His family showed up at my church one day and haven’t left since. Sam’s family is originally from Iraq and came to the United States a few years before they came to my church, so his parent’s spoke broken english, while him and his brother spoke english a little better because of being in public school. Because of the age difference and a minor language barrier, we didn’t talk that much. We were in different Sunday School classes for a while and we had nothing in common. After a few years, when we were both in the Youth Group, we became friends and saw each other more often at church functions. He constantly picked on me, and after a while we couldn’t stand each other. After we grew up a little more, I developed a little crush on him in high school, but he was already away at college. We would talk occasionally, but being 14 hours away from each other, nothing came from it. A few years later, we were both home from college and we started to talk more and more. Finally in the Lord’s timing, we began to go on dates and talking hours on the phone. Being so close with my family and growing up with them, he asked my dad for permission to date me, which was in no way necessary, but honorable.
how they asked
I had been begging Sam for months to go to Denver with me for Christmas to visit my family. He always gave me the excuse that he had to work and couldn’t take the time off and that it would be good for me to spend time with my parents by myself. I wanted to spend Christmas with him since we weren’t able to the year before and for him to spend time with my family, since we never get see them.
The day came that I had to leave for Denver and I was really upset that he wasn’t coming with me. He asked me, “What is the one thing you want for Christmas?” All I said was, “You.” But he promised that we would celebrate Christmas when I get back.
A couple days after I arrived in Denver, my parents wanted to go to the Denver Botanical Gardens to see the Christmas Lights. While there, we walked around the whole gardens and even sat around to stay out of the cold and to drink some hot chocolate. My parents kept saying they wanted to go around again, which I did not want to do because it was so cold! But they kept pushing, so I just dragged my feet along.
We reach this gazebo area that was semi-private and my mom handed me a letter that Sam had written for me and told me to go sit down and read it alone. Confused, I did was she told me. After I got done reading the letter, I got up not knowing what this was about. As soon as I got up, I saw Sam walk into the gazebo. At that moment I lost it-I couldn’t stop crying and shaking. I just couldn’t believe he was here! I don’t remember anything he was saying to me, but the next thing I knew, he was on one knee asking me if I will marry him. Again, I couldn’t believe it!
After he put the ring on my finger, we walked outside the gazebo to hug my parents. But he told me he had brought some friends with him. Confused, I looked around the corner and past the flashing cameras and saw his parents and brother! I couldn’t believe he also brought his family out to Denver! It was just surprise after surprise!
It was such a blessing and special moment for both of our families to witness and experience this engagement with us-which I never thought would happen. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. All I wanted for Christmas was him, but instead I got forever.
