How We Met
Lucas and I first met in 2008, when we were in 6th and 8th grade at the same middle school. Lucas was a popular older boy that I had a major crush on, even pretending to be on the yearbook staff so I could go take candid pictures of the 8th-grade lunch to see him. We became close friends and after a few years, we began dating in January of 2012 at the ages of 15 and 16.
We dated for a year and a half in high school together, survived two years of him being off at college, spent two wonderful years dating at West Virginia University together, and finally, have spent the last year once again long distance as he is now in medical school.
how they asked
Our first vacation together to New York City was in the works for almost a full year. In April, Lucas’s great-grandmother passed away and left him a stone to use in order to make me an engagement ring. Little did I know, while I was preparing for our upcoming trip in the early part of the summer, Lucas was creating my ring. On the second day of our trip, Lucas told me he was surprising me with a reservation at The Boathouse restaurant in Central Park (a lie) and wanted to get there early to go to a few spots he heard about. At this point, he had done an excellent job of throwing me off and I was completely oblivious.
When we reached “the spot” there were a ton of people there, so we walked further down until we thought the area would be clear so I could get a good picture. Once we got back, Lucas asked a seemingly random guy to take our picture in front of the view. After getting his phone back, Lucas turned to me, got down on one knee and popped the question! Little did I know, the “random” guy was a photographer Lucas hired to catch the whole thing and do a short photo shoot with us afterward. I was completely in shock, ecstatic, and impressed with the huge surprise he was able to pull.
