How We Met

Eric and I first met in college at the University of Florida almost ten years ago. It all started my freshman year when I was invited to my first fraternity “grab a date.” I met Eric at the party from across the beer pong table when by chance I made the winning shot. We became friends and would occasionally run into each other around campus or at fraternal events, but always went our separate ways. My junior year, one of my sorority sisters invited me to come down to Miami with her for a New Years party. Eric happened to be the one throwing the event and we were all staying at his apartment on South Beach. Over the weekend we caught up and casually discussed upcoming trips we both had planned. I was leaving for a semester abroad in Australia and he was going to South Africa for the World Cup. We immediately connected as my family is from South Africa and I was so excited to discuss his upcoming trip with him. We kept in touch while we were both abroad, chatting occasionally online since he and I were the only ones on social media at the same time, as we were both halfway across the globe.

When I arrived back home in Gainesville six months later (July 2010), I got a text message that he had brought me back a gift from South Africa and he wanted to know when he would see me. We texted a little that evening, and I told him jokingly he should fly me down to Miami on his private jet. When I awoke the next morning, I had an email with an electronic boarding pass for a flight that afternoon. Hesitant to go, and after a few phone calls with my closest friends and a little convincing from my mom, I took a chance…. and as cliché as it sounds, the rest is history. Eric was living in Miami and I was about to start my senior year of college. I told myself (and Eric) I didn’t want a boyfriend and we would see what happens. After many phone calls and weekend visits, I soon realized I was in a long distance relationship. Fast forward over three years of long distance dating, and upon finishing my masters degree at UF, I took a job in South Florida. We were finally together!

how they asked

In July 2016, I met up with a friend and backpacked parts of Europe. Eric arranged to meet me in London and extended my travels across Italy just the two of us. On the day of our sixth anniversary (July 16, 2016), we left Florence and drove to the Tuscan countryside of Chianti. Eric told me we had special plans for the day and hinted I dress nice (he knew I wouldn’t have wanted to be in typical travel outfit of leggings and t-shirt). Upon arrival at our bed and breakfast, Eric set up an amazing picnic spread and we enjoyed various fruits and cheeses while sipping prosecco as we overlooked breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Later that afternoon, just before we left for a special dinner Eric asked me to join him in watching the sunset amongst the beautiful countryside. Eric tried to get all-romantic and talk about our travels and life while all I cared about was when we were leaving for dinner (I was so hungry). Little did I know, Eric set up a hidden camera and before I knew it, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him.

Before I could process what was happening, I was crying my eyes out. Eric had to ask me a few times to actually answer the question and of course I said “YES!”

After a few moments of complete shock I was able to regain my composure and we left to celebrate at an incredible Michelin star restaurant (La Bottega del ’30) in the middle of Chianti. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with champagne and congratulated personally by the chef, who took away our menus and told us she would prepare a special meal for us. After five of the most unbelievable dishes we have ever had, we came back to the hotel and called some of our friends and family to share the excitement. The proposal, the dinner and the entire Italian vacation are memories we will share forever.
