Megan and Danny

How We Met

We met in high school on a missions trip in Mexicali (2009), my sophomore year and his senior year. We became best friends over the next three years. He asked me to my senior prom, just as friends.

Then asked me to be his girlfriend freshman year of college. It was during the Spring Gala dance at the stroke of midnight (which was also my birthday). The day before my sophomore year of college, Danny came to my dorm and surprised me with his own acceptance into my school! We then went through the next three years in college together. We had the time of our lives, graduated, and now here we are to present day!

how they asked

This is a story of how I planned my own surprise…It began when I (the bride) decided to plan a surprise birthday party for Danny (the groom) at Disneyland. The planning process was going very smoothly with both of our families and friends all planning to show up. We were meeting at the Wilderness Explorer section of California Adventure. It’s a ropes course based after Pixar’s UP. It was also where he first said “I love you”.

Danny had no idea anyone was going to be there. I was amazed at how easily it was to get 20 people to take the day off in the middle of the week and come to Disneyland. I had to stall all morning so everyone could gather themselves in the right spot. A LOT of stalling – I went back to the car about three times, I pretended I needed to buy sunscreen, and we were in one small gift shop for over 20 minutes. I was getting desperate and quite confused as to why he didn’t mind or think I was acting weird, but there was no time to worry about that. My adrenaline was pumping as this was one of the biggest surprises I was about to pull off.

Once everyone was gathered, we could FINALLY make our way over to everyone hiding. I was unbelievably excited. I saw everyone huddled and then “SURPRISE HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” A sigh of relief. It was a success. He was speechless… or so I thought.

After the surprise, my friend had us go over to the exact spot where he said “I love you” to take our photos. I was giddy with excitement because it was a success! All the family and friends were at a rope bridge below us. Suddenly as she was taking our pictures, Danny turns to me and says a bunch of words I completely forgot, and tells me how much he loves me. I couldn’t believe what was happening.

He got down on one knee while fidgeting in his fanny pack for the ring and says, “Megan Riley, will you go on this adventure with me? Will you marry me?” I was in complete disbelief and shock. I think the picture of that moment says it all. I said yes of course and went about my day in a trans. (we are also wearing UP shirts)

So Danny was behind EVERYTHING from the start (and quite enjoyed my ridiculous stalling). He had been cooking up the plan for over four months and made me believe I came up with it all. Everything came together so easily because of it. I had planned my own surprise.
