Colby and I met through a mutual friend in the dining hall at the University of Georgia around October of our freshman year. We saw each other from time to time in the dining hall and would sit together but that was pretty much the only times we saw each other. Our sophomore year, we ended up running in to each other at a mutual friend’s house. I loved that he was so positive and encouraging and loved the Lord with all of his heart. I remember loving just being around him, admiring his strong character, respectable reputation, and how he was always giving glory to God for every achievement in his life. He asked if I wanted to study with him and before long we were hanging out several days a week and became good friends. We started officially dating in March 2010 (our sophomore year at UGA). Life has brought us many disappointments, joys, and opportunities, but we always try to support and encourage one another in every way we can!
Colby bought my engagement ring in December of 2012, but he had to wait many months until my parents gave him their blessing to marry me. We both knew God wanted us to wait until there was unity and peace among our families about our marriage. I had hinted to Colby a couple of times that I would love for Chloe (my best friend for the past 10 years who just so happens to be an amazing wedding photographer) to photograph our proposal. He told me he didn’t like the idea because he didn’t want anyone to be there for our special moment. I decided to let him do it his way, but I was secretly hoping he would change his mind.
Colby finally received the long-awaited blessing to marry me from my family at the beginning of June 2013. My Mom officially gave him the go-ahead on a Monday, and I thought he would probably wait awhile to propose. Colby was coaching a summer baseball team at the time and was busy coaching every weekend. After church that Sunday he headed off to the tournament, and I didn’t suspect a thing. I was so excited to finally hang out with my friend, Chloe! She had text me several weeks prior telling me she was buying a new lens and asked me to be her photo subject. I didn’t think anything of it because she had asked me to be her subject for photo shoots a couple of times before. After some much-needed Starbucks we were planning on heading to the Botanical Gardens in Athens, Georgia for the shoot.
However, about 30 minutes before we left Starbucks it started to rain. Instead of postponing the shoot Chloe insisted we at least try to get a few shots in. She had the awesome idea of picking up an umbrella on the way to use as a prop for the shoot in the rain. When we arrived at the gardens it was pouring down rain! There was a foot of water running down the path, but Chloe insisted we only needed a couple of photos in the natural light and then we could run back to the car. I was thinking to myself how much of a favor I was doing Chloe. Little did I know what was in store…
When we got to the spot the rain suddenly let up to a drizzle. Chloe whipped out her camera and started shooting away of me posing with the umbrella in the rain. Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and I could not believe my eyes!
There before me stood Colby with the biggest grin on his face that I had ever seen holding four dozen red roses in his hands (one for every month we had been dating). He stooped down on one knee, took my hand, and started reciting the sweetest proposal in the world! He told me I was the Proverbs 31 woman he had always longed for, that I was the most beautiful woman in the world, and that the Lord had fulfilled all his desires for a wife through me. All I could do was grin from ear to ear! I was ecstatic!! He asked me to marry him and slid the most beautiful ring I have ever seen in my life on my finger!!! I later realized that because I was so shocked and excited by his proposal that I had never answered, “yes” to his question. His proposal was more perfect and romantic than I could have imagined! Our story is such a testimony of God’s faithfulness and love for us! Even though we had to wait awhile to get engaged, we can truly testify that God’s timing is perfect and he works all things together for the good of those who love him!
