How We Met
Derek and I met 10 years ago when we were 18. We went to the same high school, but we never knew each other. He says that he’d see me walking around campus and he’d think to himself how pretty I was… and I had no idea that he existed! We finally met after I graduated. He found my profile online (on MySpace!) through a mutual friend, and he sent me a message. When we met in person, we knew we had something special. Life ended up pulling us in different directions over the years, but we always found our way back to each other. This time, for good!

When we celebrated our first Valentine’s Day together, he sprinkled rose petals and placed candles all over the hotel room where we spent the night together (still can’t believe my Mom and Dad allowed that to happen!) It was so romantic. We were so young. Flash forward 10 years and so many life experiences later…
During a trip to New York City I expected that he might propose but had no idea if, how, or when he was going to do it. On Friday night I was trying to make plans with my best friend Nicole who I met in New York six years ago. We were matched randomly as roommates at NYU (thanks NYU!) I spent the evening thinking that Derek and I were just going to meet her at a rooftop bar in our hotel. I had no idea there was a bar in our hotel, but Derek said that he’d found it while he was wandering around earlier that day (while I was getting ready to go out!) I didn’t think much of it… until he led me down a hallway on the top floor towards one of the hotel suites. I instantly started to cry.
He opened the door and there were rose petals and candles everywhere. It was full circle for us. He led me out onto the balcony which overlooked the city lights, and sitting in the corner was Nicole. She captured the entire thing for us. My Mom was the one who shipped all of the rose petals and candles to our hotel, and I had no idea any of this was going to happen. Derek had spent the entire day trying to pull this all together. I was completely oblivious! I’m so grateful. After our magical moment we popped the champagne, called our family, changed into comfortable clothes, and celebrated.
Soon after that it started to rain, and Derek and I had the most unexpectedly perfect How I Met Your Mother moment in New York City. It’s one of our favorite shows.
We happend to have brought with us, expecting summertime rain during our trip… a yellow umbrella. So we were able to capture the most perfect Ted Mosby moment with our yellow umbrella, under the falling rain on a rooftop in New York City, on the night of our engagement. It couldn’t have been more perfect and meaningful.
Our favorite quote ever is from the show, and it explains our journey together so perfectly: “I love our story. Sure it’s messy, but it’s the story that brought us here.”
We’re still on cloud nine!
