How We Met
Like all great love stories… ours started in a bar. A few drinks in, Max was looking prettyyyyyy good in his wig.. but what really caught my attention were his killer dance moves. I’d never seen someone just completely go for it on the dance floor, with no regard or care to how he was perceived by others. He wasn’t the slick guy with the pick-up lines trying to take you home, he was the dude everyone wanted to be friends with- especially me. I’d honestly never laughed so hard with a complete stranger.
I don’t think either of us were looking for anything romantic, we were both in transition points in our life, but we exchanged numbers- never expecting to hear from him again, really- but the next weekend we drove 3 hours each (from Witchita Falls and Houston TX to Dallas) just to meet in the middle to go on our first date…. where he called me out for swallowing my gum… but that’s another story.
How They Asked
Shortly after deciding we were going to be exclusive- like one month after to be exact- Max got a 2-year assignment with the Air Force overseas to England. For any other couple who’d only been dating a whopping three months, that may have been a nail in the coffin, but thankfully… A) we’re not “any other couple” and B) I’m a flight attendant.
The next year and a half was a blur of traveling back and forth to Europe, making new friends, and discovering mulled wine. We spent a lot of time apart but our love for each other only grew, and although I thought talking too much about the future was pretty taboo- I knew Max was the one I wanted to spend my life with, but I absolutely didn’t want to pressure him into making that commitment before he was ready.
In April of 2018, a year and a half of dating later, we met in Barcelona, Spain for a weekend trip. We ate amazing food, wandered around the city and lost ourselves in the architecture and culture. Little unbeknownst to me, Max had a ring in his pocket the entire day waiting for the perfect opportunity to propose. We went to La Sagrada Familia, he thought it might be the perfect place, but it was too crowded
Then we went to the beach, watched the locals lounging in the sun, and drank some swanky cocktails. At this point Max even “went to the bathroom” to move the ring to his front pocket, sure the moment would present itself- but it never felt quite right.
(peep the ringless finger in the above photo)
That night as we got ready for dinner and a night out on the town, Max felt he HAD to do it- mainly because he couldn’t imagine having to carry around the ring for another day! So he suggested we take a cab out to park Güell to watch the sunset, instead of hitting it in the morning as we had originally planned- which was totally fine by me.
We strolled around the park, a bit over-dressed. Every other minute Max would ask if he should get someone to take a picture of us (uncharacteristic behavior), and I would say no. Finally, we came to this overlook of the city right as the sun was setting- the sky was painted a beautiful pink and purple color, we both looked out in awe and admired the expanse of Barcelona and its sky line, how the buildings stretched out to meet the ocean in the distance. It was then that Max said “hold on I’m going to get these people to take a picture for us” and jogged over to some complete strangers and handed them my phone.
When he ran back over we both smiled, then he turned me towards him. I thought he wanted a photo of us kissing, so I went onto my tip-toes… but he took a knee. I was in complete disbelief! I honestly thought he was joking!
“Babe, stop,” I said.
”Baby, I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” He said.
“No, you don’t.”
YES, I WAS PRETTY MUCH TRYING TO TALK HIM OUT OF IT.
But he still asked, “Will you marry me?”
It took me a good few seconds to wrap my head around the fact that this was NOT a joke and he really WAS proposing to me- but as soon as reality slapped me in the face I emphatically squealed “YES!”
And Max fist-pumped to celebrate my answer- how dreamy is that?!
Lucky for me- Max had the presence of mind to ask the lovely strangers- who barely spoke English- to video the whole thing! They NAILED IT, and it’s something I watch on the daily to remind myself that fairytales do come true.
