How We Met
Matt and I were both raised on Cape Cod in a small town called Sandwich. Being a few years older than myself, we didn’t really know each other from our younger years but always knew “of” one another. If you’ve seen that smile, then you would know what I’m talking about. I went to a small college in Boston, MA along with his younger brother’s girlfriend, Lexi. Matt happened to appear in my dorm room one night when my roommates and I decided to have a small after party. Initially We exchanged a few mindless words and then continued on with our lives for about a year.
After graduating from Lasell, two of my best fiends and I took a leap of faith and bought one way tickets to Hawaii. As magical as it was I had to move home after six months due to over spending on acai bowls and Mai Tai’s. At the time this was life crushing so I worked two jobs just to save up to get back on the rock in no time. The summer where it all began, something unexpected and extra ordinary happened. I was “properly” introduced to Matt by a mutual friend we had grown up with. After both expressing interest in one another we all planned to go out one night and from then on we he’s had me hooked! It took several meetings for fate to finally slap us on the wrist and make us realize we were it for each other. Now I have my best friend and future husband to join me on many more adventures-Hawaii being one, of course!
how they asked
Two years later, on June 5th, 2016 the two of us went on a family vacation to St. Thomas. We had arrived on the island the day before the proposal and I was as sick as a dog. Who gets a summertime cold?! We went to a beautiful dinner the night we landed and then back to the villa knowing we had a fun day planned on a 46ft Catamaran sailboat the next day. I had the world’s most obnoxious cough and sniffles all night long. When I woke up the next morning I was miraculously better! Hallelujah! We arrived to the sailboat named “Meow” and were instantly served breakfast and the signature Island, Rum Punch.
The weather was perfect and the views of the US Virgin Islands were unlike any other. We finally arrived to our second stop called, Christmas Cove, where we were all having the time of our lives paddle boarding, snorkeling, and just enjoying the scenery and each other’s company. After about an hour into the stop, Matt took ahold of my hand and asked if he could show me something on the top deck. I didn’t think anything of it other than that he was going to make me try some sort of fancy flip into the water, so I was a little hesitant and a bit stalled. Holding onto my hand until we finally got to the top, he pointed to his left and asked, “What’s that?”. That was when I saw the banner that said, “Brianna, will you marry me?”
I cupped my face and instantly started to smile and cry. He took ahold of my hand, got down on one knee, and popped the question (with an amazing and thoughtful speech of course)! The moment was so surreal and unexpected that I could barely comprehend what was happening. He then pulled out the ring from his back pocket of his board shorts and opened the box. That was when it all hit me at once and the happy tears came flooding.
It couldn’t have been a more genuine and pure moment.
His family was in the water watching while taking pictures and video tapping it all.
We spent the rest of the day laughing and celebrating by dancing, sailing, and drinking champagne. It was unlike anything I could truly put into words.
I couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect way to start forever with my best friend. We spent the rest of the trip over the moon. This island hopper finally found her captain.
