Abby and Matthew

How We Met

Matt and I have known each other most of our lives because our older sisters were friends and played sports together. Matt was always “Lauren’s cute younger brother” to me. Although we always knew who each other was, it wasn’t until college that we reconnected. Matt actually had followed me on multiple social media sites and began “liking” my pictures. One night, Matt messaged me on Facebook, and I couldn’t believe it. I immediately texted my friends before even answering Matt. Matt and I began chatting, eventually gave him my number, and the rest is history!

How They Asked

Our first year of dating we decided we wanted to start a vacation tradition and began to research places not too far that neither of us had been to. We ultimately chose Lake George, which quickly became our favorite and special place. This past summer, we planned our Lake George trip just like every year, always trying to think of new things we had not done before.

Abby and Matthew's Engagement in Lake George, NY

We saw that they offered a “fireworks on the lake” cruise on Thursday nights, and I instantly knew I wanted to do it! Matt jokes that I unknowingly planned my own proposal! Fast forward to the day, the weather was predicting storms, and the company told us they had not yet decided if it would still happen. Little did I know, Matt was extremely anxious and nervous that they would cancel. We found out a few hours later, to his relief, the fireworks were on! After going to dinner at our favorite restaurant in Lake George, we headed to the boat!

Once we got on the boat, I decided to run to the bathroom before the fireworks began so I wouldn’t miss anything! While I was away, Matt had asked the family behind us, who had a video camera, if they would record it for us! Luckily, they said yes! As soon as the fireworks began, Matt asked the same man if he would take a picture of us. I found this strange because Matt is never one to Ask to take a picture and I didn’t understand why he would want to take a picture when the fireworks had just started!

While the man took a picture of us, I noticed Matt moving around (which was trying to pull the ring box out). As I began saying, “what are you doing?” Matt dropped to his knee and promised to love and care for me for the rest of our lives! I instantly began bawling and immediately said yes! This caused everyone around us to start cheering and congratulating us! It was truly everything I had dreamed of since I was a little girl, and we cannot wait for our wedding this summer on the same date he proposed!
