How We Met
Matt and I first met when I applied for a hostessing position at Sugar Factory Restaurant in Town Square, Las Vegas back in the spring of 2014. I went in for an interview and waited at the bar to meet with the manager. The manager was running very late so I was waiting at the bar for over an hour. It’s a good thing that the bartender that day was very sweet and made sure to keep my water glass filled while I waited. The bartender was Matt! Fast forward a couple months. Matt and I became coworkers and shared the same group of work friends at the restaurant. One night to celebrate a coworkers birthday, everyone went out for drinks and dancing. I loves to dance! But I noticed no one from our group would dance! Matt walked up to our table after getting some drinks for everyone and started dancing with me right away. I knew right in that moment that this guy was FUN!
He had the biggest smile and loved to laugh and have a good time. We danced together the rest of the night! After a busy summer filled with my college graduation, music festivals, birthdays, nights out on the town, and two weeks apart because I visited my family in New York, Matt and I became official. He greeted me at the airport with flowers and said that two weeks was just way too long to be away. That night he asked me to be his girlfriend. It was such a sweet moment and it was so cool knowing that no one had more fun than the two of us together. It was right.
That fall, I applied for an Assistant Stage Managing position in Seattle, Washington. When I received the call that I got the job, Matt was so supportive and happy for me. When I asked him what we would do about being together, his exact words were, “If you’re going, I’m going.” Less than two months later, we packed up the car and our scruffy terrier, Dez, and drove for two straight days from Las Vegas to Seattle, where we now, continue to live in our first apartment together in the city.
how they asked
It was a gorgeous summer day. Friday, July 29th. It was two days after my 24th birthday and since Matt had to work all week, he said he was able to take a long weekend to celebrate with me. He told me he had the whole weekend planned for us. We started out by having a delicious brunch down in Pike Place Market by the water, complete with mimosas! After walking around, checking out some of the shops and enjoying the beautiful weather, we headed back to our apartment to get ready for an early dinner. Later, when we were all dressed up and ready to go to dinner, I noticed that the Uber Matt ordered wasn’t actually an Uber at all. He had ordered a luxurious black car from a car service. He kept it cool by telling me that he just wanted to do something extra special for my birthday to let me know how much he loved me. I was pretty oblivious to what was going on since it all seemed to be related to my birthday. The car took us over to Alki Beach, which has a gorgeous view of the entire Seattle city skyline. We got out of the car and he led us to a spot by the water where there were flowers and champagne on ice waiting. “How sweet!” I thought. Still oblivious. Once we got to the spot with flowers and champagne by the water, Matt began to tell me how much he loved me and that he would love me through everything we will have to face in life. He then got down on one knee and reached for his jacket pocket.
This was the moment I was no longer oblivious. I then understood everything that happened that day. He pulled out a wooden box with the most gorgeous ring inside. In fact, it was the exact ring I had fallen in love with while on our vacation together earlier that year! I was stunned and so excited! So stunned that I kept saying “is this real?” in between the gasps and tears and Matt had to ask, “that’s a yes? right?” after finally putting the ring on my finger.
“Of course!” We popped the champagne and looked out at the city skyline, filled with such excitement. Matt then said, “make sure to wave to Dan.” I asked, “who is Dan?” I didn’t know anyone named Dan. “He’s the photographer hiding over there.” Matt had made sure to have a friend document the entire proposal! The most incredible moment was now captured! After taking some photos and sipping champagne, we hopped back in the car and headed to dinner.
I was still in so much shock that I didn’t even think to call or text anyone, and was basically waiting for the feeling to re-enter my body. I just kept asking Matt if it was really happening. We were really getting married! We arrived at the restaurant for dinner in the city and once we got inside, we headed to a large table in the back. Sitting at the table, were Matt’s parents, his two brothers, their friend Erica, and my parents. My parents had flown in all the way from New York. As you can guess, I was overcome with emotion and completely lost it. Tears everywhere. He had planned out the entire proposal, the whole weekend, and even included our families, which was the most incredible thing anyone has ever done for me. The rest of the weekend was filled with many toasts, laughs, cries, and dancing. It was the most exciting and special weekend of our lives. Our wedding date is set for our 3rd anniversary!
