Maryssa and Kyle
How We Met
Our love story began about 4 years ago on the web…Yes, that’s right, Kyle and I first met online. After a few months of chatting online we decided to take the next step and meet in person. Kyle being a professional golfer suggested we meet at a driving range in Sonoma. I showed up, nervous and excited, and saw him right away. Our eyes met and he walked over. We hugged and then walked over to his golf bag where I sat and watched him hit golf balls for the next hour as we talked nonstop. It was natural and like we’d been friends for years. We then made our way down to the Sonoma Plaza where we had lunch at my favorite spot, Mary’s Pizza Shack. We walked around the plaza going into different shops for hours. Our cheeks hurt from smiling the entire time we were together. We laughed about that afterwards. I then had to go to work where I was hostessing at a restaurant in town for a few hours that night.
So I drove him back to his car at the driving range, and it was then just before he got out of the car where we shared our first kiss. I’ll never forget it. Since I had to go into work, I thought for sure he would make the long, over an hour drive home. But when I got off work and checked my phone, there was a text saying he had waited for me and was still in town. He wanted to see me again, and didn’t want to go home yet. I was shocked, and excited that he stuck around just for me! I was smitten with him. So, we met downtown and sat and talked until we both realized it was past midnight and should probably say our goodbyes.
Since that night, we have been inseparable. We moved in together a few months later. Everything happens for a reason. I’m a true believer in that. Kyle came into my life at just the right time, and has been there for me through some of the toughest moments in my life and vice versa. We have been through more together our first few years of dating than most people who have been married 10+ years. Kyle saved me when my parents got divorced. I saved him when both of his grandparents passed away just weeks from each other. And he again saved me, when my father passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. He is my soulmate, best friend and the sweetest man I’ve ever met.
how they asked
It was Thursday June 15, 2017 (who proposes on a Thursday?! Oh, Kyle does…) He said he wanted to go for a drive. He was not being his fun-loving and silly self. I could tell he was nervous, quiet and had a lot on his mind. I thought to myself, “OK maybe a drive will be good for him to clear his mind.” Well, he ended up taking me to 3 very special spots. Stop #1 was at the driving range that is now shut down in Sonoma where Kyle and I had arranged our first time meeting in person after talking online and Face-timing (to make sure we weren’t Cat-fishing each other!) almost 4 years ago. We stood in the exact spots where we had back then, and reminisced on how we had both showed up wearing the exact same outfit. No joke… Black shirt and white shorts. We both laughed when we first looked at each other and noticed our matching outfits. It was a good ice breaker. As we stood in the spot where we first laid eyes on each other I thought he was going to propose in this moment but then… Stop #2 was at an old Oak tree in a field. This tree in particular is my favorite tree in town.
I always stop and admire it when we are nearby. A few months ago, Kyle and I stopped in the car and parked near the tree. We had an amazing talk about life, love and our future together. He asked me if I remembered our talk the last time we were there. I thought he was going to propose in this moment but then… Stop #3 was at my Grandma Marian’s grave site. “Ema” as I called her when I was little, was and is a very special person in my life. She is definitely one of my guardian angels watching over me. Kyle knows about my special relationship with her of course and had taken me to her grave site a few months prior.
During this visit, he prayed out loud right in front of me and told her “I promise to take good care of Maryssa. And I’m going to make her a very happy girl very soon.” These words sent chills up my spine and brought tears to my eyes. So of course when we stopped here I thought to myself, “This is it. The 3rd and final stop, he will propose here!” But then… We got back in the car and headed home. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for Kyle to do sweet things like this or take me on drives and walks to special places. So I thought, “Well that was sweet” and turned on my favorite show on Netflix and started to relax. I noticed he kept going into our backyard but didn’t think much of it. He then came over to me a few minutes later, grabbed both of my hands and led me outside into the backyard.
He asked me to close my eyes until we got outside. When I opened my eyes, he was smiling the biggest smile. He told me he loved me and hugged me. He said a few sweet sentences that I’ll never forget and then got down on one knee holding my hands and asked me to marry him. I remember saying “YES” twice, just to be sure he heard me! ;) He then pulled out a gorgeous rose gold engagement ring and slipped it onto my shaking finger.
That was the best moment of my life. The man of my dreams has promised to spend his life with me! We both stood there and cried happy tears, laughed, kissed and hugged a lot, and then said to each other “What do we do now?!” We soaked in the moment for almost two hours together, just the two of us, and then called all of our most important people to share the exciting news. I can happily say I’m the luckiest girl in the world, and cannot wait to marry my truest love!
