How We Met

Gunner and I met back in seventh grade when my family first moved into their current home and shortly after I became friends with the guy next door, who funny enough, was Gunner’s best friend growing up. All of my dance friends would spend the weekends at my house and we would always giggle about how cute the neighborhood guys were and whenever Gunner was around, I would get butterflies in my stomach. However, we were young and I never gave it much thought. I just knew he was cute and we quickly became good friends.

We went to different high schools and stayed in touch here and there but it wasn’t until we graduated that we started to show more interest in each other. I had to play hard to get through and get him wrapped around my finger before he could call himself my boyfriend, some might say I’m a little high maintenance so after quite a few months of him sticking around and continuously going out of his way to do the most amazing things for me, he became my boyfriend and it’s been smooth sailing ever since. I’ve never met someone as selfless and loving as him, not only does he care about my successes, accomplishments, and growth as a person, but he always goes above and beyond for my family and friends.

Maryssa's Proposal in Rome, Italy

My family means the world to me and I knew he was the one when he would spend his free time bonding with my siblings and constantly helping my parents with whatever they needed and they just absolutely love and adore him. We’ve always shared the same mindset for what we want in life and spent four years going on spectacular trips together, back and forth from each other’s houses spending time with each other’s families, and encouraging one another to pursue our dreams. After four years, we decided to move in together and it was the best decision we’ve ever made because it solidified our commitment to each other and here we are, a year later, planning our future wedding and just over the moon about this new chapter in our relationship!

how they asked

So for Gunner’s 22nd birthday, I surprised him with a trip to Europe! Growing up, I was very fortunate to travel all over the world with my grandparents and I knew I wanted to do something very special for him because of how much he has done for me over the last few years. I wanted him to see some of my most favorite places I’ve ever been to. We went on a cruise all over Italy and Greece and had the most magical time together. Our favorite spot was Positano, along with the Amalfi Coast, they had the most spectacular food and views. There truly isn’t anything else like it.

About six months before we went on our trip, Gunner asked for my parents’ permission to propose while we were there because he knew that where we were traveling to was my favorite place in the world and wanted it to be a trip of a lifetime. We spent two days in Rome visiting the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, eating so much pasta and enjoying the best wine we’ve ever had!

Our first night on the ship, he wanted to take me to the Italian restaurant on board and then go watch the live band and enjoy some drinks together. When we were in the lounge, the band started playing one of my favorite songs and I had turned around to watch them sing and when I looked back at Gunner, he was down on one knee with my ring asking me to be his wife!! It felt so surreal and I was beyond surprised because if you know me, I don’t do well with surprises!

I always end up finding out what’s happening! He blew all of my expectations out of the water and I was so happy with how intimate the moment was. I wish I could relive that day every day! Afterward, we had so many people congratulating us and buying us drinks and we spent the night dancing together and enjoying every moment of it. I was so ecstatic to share the news with my friends and family and was shocked when they all knew because, like me, my family is the worst at keeping secrets! I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way though, it truly was the most amazing day of my life and I’m so thankful I get to marry my best friend!
