Mary and Jon
How We Met
From Mary, the bride-to-be: “I was entering my senior year at San Diego State. A few nights before the semester began my friend Rachel was having a party at her house. I have had “Grandma Status” since I can remember and would usually say no to this kind of a thing but, for some reason I put on a cute outfit and out I went. That was where I met Jon. I had heard about Jon and actually met him in passing a few times before this when I had a boyfriend, when he had a girlfriend and we didn’t really pay much attention to each other. But this night was different. We talked seamlessly about who knows what – sharing stories, laughing, hugging; it was wonderful. I felt like I had known him forever. I planned on moving back to New Jersey after graduation so a boyfriend in California wasn’t even on my radar BUT I knew that I had just met someone very special. Little did I know after our conversation he walked over to our friend Rachel and said “I’m going to marry that girl.” Five years, 2 apartments and 1 dog later, he was right!”
how they asked
From Mary, the bride-to-be: “I woke up on January 2nd feeling very excited because Jon and I were going on a museum date to Balboa Park. We had just spent the New Years holiday in Big Bear with our friends so I was excited to get some quality time just me and him. As we were walking through gorgeous Balboa Park he said, “hey, lets go in here” and he pointed to a cute little garden. “Ok!” I said, still not thinking anything of it. We walked through the garden and up to a little fountain where he pulled out 2 quarters and said, “let’s make a wish.” Still clueless, I said “Sure.” I closed my eyes, made my wish and threw the coin into the fountain. Jon did the same. Like an excited little kid Jon asked, “Ok, what did you wish for!?” and I said, “I can’t tell you, then it won’t come true.” He laughed and said “Ok, well do you want to know my wish?” and I said “Sure.” It was then that He dropped to one knee. He told me that I am the love of his life and he wants to spend the rest of his life with me and that his wish was to marry me (he said a bunch of other stuff but I was so excited I didn’t hear anything else he said). All I could say was, “oh my god, oh my god!” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a BEAUTIFUL round diamond ring in the most perfect rose gold setting. All I could do was look at him and say “yes, yes, yes!” He stood up and we hugged for what felt like forever. I was completely shocked and overwhelmed with happiness. I couldn’t believe that I get to plan forever with my best friend and that he pulled off surprising the heck out of me! Just to put a cherry on top of the sundae, our friend Rachel whose house we met at 5 years earlier (and is now one our closest and dearest friends) was secretly hiding in that garden and captured the whole thing! I could not be more lucky.
