How We Met
We met on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2012. I had stopped by her cousin’s (who was also my college roommate and good friend) NYE party by chance on the way to another NYE party.
An hour or so into the party, at around 9:00 pm, he asks that I come out to help him grab some stuff out of his cousin’s car. Getting out of the car, I see this incredibly well dressed and made up 20 year old in black pants and a gold shirt. I introduce myself and she unleashes this huge smile, and shrieks “omg you’re gorgeous you look like a young Al Pacino” and hugs me. I was taken aback to say the least (but dually impressed and intrigued).
It took a few months after that of texting back and forth to set up an in-person date (I was working and she was finishing up school), but the rest is history.
how they asked
I organized a surprise committee of about 40 of our closest family and friends to be waiting a few blocks away in a small park in Bay Ridge Brooklyn from where I proposed separately. Her cousin (and my college roommate) Con was hiding nearby (along with my other friend Marc who you can see in the foreground of my proposal picture behind the large pole) and snapped away as soon as I got on bended knee. He took some great pics.
I have a very old book of Shakespeare sonnets (I randomly send them to Mary via email on some nights, word for word to express my love for her), so I told her I had a big family party later that afternoon and that I wanted to try out this new piece for my Canon camera by taking some pictures of her with some objects near the water. I brought along the Shakespeare book, and asked that she hold it while I take some pictures of her. On the last page of the book, I had written a few words, and along with “Will You Marry Me?” on the bottom.
After the initial shock wore off, I told her I wanted to walk a few blocks over to the nearby park to take some pics in front of the nice flowers, where I had the surprise committee waiting.
A small celebration was held at my nearby apartment afterwards.
