Phyllis and Calvin | Marriage Proposal in Las Vegas

How we met: Calvin and I met on May 17, 2009 at a party. We ended up taking a group picture at the event that was later posted on Facebook. Someone tagged me in the picture and Calvin sent me a friend request. Over the next few years, we remained in contact, but never took it beyond casual texts and phone conversations. On May 12, 2012, for no reason at all I called Calvin so that we could hang out together. It was such a beautiful day. Perfect weather! I felt like enjoying the day and he’s the person I wanted to spend it with. So I called and we decided to do a movie. We went to see “The Five Year Engagement.” Movie was OK, but there was a line that stuck out, “No cookie is perfect. Sometimes you have to just pick a cookie and take a bite.” We later discussed this and both agreed that waiting for the perfect person had held us both back in the past.

Since that first date, we have grown closer, got on each other’s nerves, made beautiful memories, laughed and cried together (well I cried and he watched), enjoyed time with our families and friends and fell head over heels in love with each other. I believe Calvin is my better half that was created just for me because he was born the day after my birth. My very own fairytale!

how they asked: This past April, to celebrate our birthdays, we went to Las Vegas. Calvin wanted to celebrate my birthday at midnight, so we started the evening with dinner and headed to a new ferris wheel called the High Roller. We were 550ft above Vegas and the lights and scenery were amazing!

It was just a magical evening. Calvin was taking pictures of me with my phone and then gave the phone to someone on the ride. I figured it was to take a picture of both of us but…it was to videotape what was about to happen. He took me by my hand and looked at me and I instantly knew what he was about to do. I immediately lost it!!! I did the ugly pageant cry and didn’t hear anything he said. I saw the ring and screamed. He went down on one knee and placed my new jewelry on my hand. Later he told me that he said, “Some marriages don’t last, so I won’t ask you to marry me. Phyllis, will you spend the rest of your life with me?” At one point, I realized that I hadn’t heard the proposal, but knew I needed to respond, so I squealed, “Yes! Yes! Yes!” I kissed my boyfriend goodbye and said hello to my fiancé. It was the perfect night, and I won the biggest jackpot in Vegas! It was the best birthday ever!!
