Mark and Alex's Proposal in Key West
How we met: Alex and I met in the fall of 2007 while we were both attending the University of Florida. The following semester, she studied abroad in Italy and we stayed in touch through email. After she returned home at the end of the spring 2008 semester, we took the opportunity to get together since we were both home for the summer. We picked up right where we left off and our relationship really began in the fall of 2008.
how they asked: Fast forward to 2014. We have been dating for 5 years, purchased a home in South Florida, and began our professional and personal lives together. Alex is the hardest working accountant I know and we “mutually” decided to take a vacation to Key West, so that she could get away from work and also for my birthday in July, so I let her plan it. All the while, I had already purchased the engagement ring and had been holding on to it since April, planting seeds along the way that we should have a romantic weekend together on my birthday, when I would ask her to marry me.
The big day finally arrived, I couldn’t sleep the night before. I had been thinking about this day for months, years even. We woke up at 5:45 AM to have a sunrise picnic on the beach in Key West, something she thought I wanted to do just because I was the birthday boy and was allowed to do whatever I wanted on my special day.
It was perfectly intimate and we were literally the only people on the beach, as you can see in the photos. I thought about hiring a photographer, having family involved, and making a big production of the proposal, but at that final moment I knew I made the right decision by asking her in the privacy of what was essentially our own beach. Good planning, also a bit of luck.
When the moment was just right, I asked if she wanted to take a photo together down by the water. I told her I was going to hit the timer on the camera, but I actually just hit record. We went down to the water to strike a pose and after a few sentimental words, I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. Alex saying “yes” was the greatest gift I could have ever received on my birthday.
