Marissa and Patrick
How We Met
We met on March 31st, 2016. I had just moved back to Omaha, Nebraska in the middle of my sophomore year of college to be closer to home. I was just starting to settle in and start dating, and my brother actually showed me a dating app I should try called OkCupid because it was better (in his opinion) than other options out there. So, I downloaded it and a few days later I matched with Patrick. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, and the first thing Patrick asked me was “what is your favorite Harry Potter book?” Turns out, we have the same favorite book! (Order of the Phoenix if you’re curious).
Our first date was at this awesome taco shop in Omaha called Voodoo Taco. We both weren’t expecting much, but we ended up staying for HOURS just talking, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. At the end of the night, Patrick walked me to my car and said: “This went way better than I thought, when can I see you again?” I told my mom later that night the only thing I know from that night is that I never want to stop seeing Patrick again.
This started our journey of constant laughter, love, and overall amazing experiences. I knew I loved this man from day one, and that only grew in the 3 and a half years before we got engaged. We’ve had an incredible journey filled with getting our sweet pup Gus and moving twice and landing in South Carolina. And the best part? When we first met 3 years ago, we only lived 10 minutes away from each other and had it not been for both of us using that dating app, we never would have met. How crazy is that??
How They Asked
Fast forward to August 2nd, 2019. We have been living in Greenville, SC for almost a year now and had started looking at engagement rings, so I knew something was on the horizon. Patrick had told me his brother and girlfriend were visiting us that weekend, and I was SO excited because I love having company! I got no details for what we were doing that weekend other than it was all a surprise! I was skeptical, mainly because Patrick and I don’t really do surprises, but I couldn’t shake the excited feeling I had all week!
I got home from work that Friday to a quiet house and Patrick standing there with the biggest grin on his face. As I ask him where everyone is, my best friend and her husband pop out from behind the couch! I couldn’t believe they were here! After a few minutes of crying and hugging, Patrick lets me know that our pup Gus was at a dog hotel, and to pack a bag because we were going away for the weekend! I immediately start packing, even though I didn’t know what I was packing for. We left, and an hour later we were at a beautiful cabin in Columbus, North Carolina on top of a MOUNTAIN! I couldn’t believe how gorgeous it was, and that Patrick did all of this for me. We spent the evening grilling and playing board games, and I couldn’t wait to see what else was in store.
The next surprise was that we were going to be spending our Saturday at the Biltmore in Asheville, NC! I had been wanting to go there since we moved to the Carolinas. I thought it maybe could happen that day, but it didn’t strike me as a place Patrick would want to propose, so I didn’t think anything of it. We had an incredible day exploring all the Biltmore had to offer, then drove back to the cabin. I was trying to think of when it could happen now because all we had planned was dinner that evening. After everyone got refreshed from walking all day, my friend Katie said we should go to this overlook down the road and take some pictures. She loves taking pictures and we both were dressed up, so I didn’t think anything of it. The overlook is a beautiful landscape where you can only see mountains for miles.
I start by taking pictures of Katie and her husband and then gave my phone to Katie to take pictures of Patrick and I. I get next to Patrick and he immediately spins me around, and before I know it, he’s on one new with this INCREDIBLE ring. It takes me a minute to fully realize what’s going on, then Patrick goes on to tell me how he couldn’t imagine spending his life with anyone else and asked me to marry him! I said yes, of course, we took a few pictures, and then spend the rest of the weekend celebrating our engagement! It was so perfect and we can’t wait to start planning our dream wedding and more importantly, get married!
