How We Met
I met David in high school at a New Year’s Eve gathering in 2012. I was instantly drawn to his sweet smile and flowy hair (the Bieber style back then). He was so funny and seemed to be amused by my jokes as well. After this night, we started talking A LOT. He asked me to be his girlfriend on January 4th, 2013. We ended up going to the same college where we both joined Greek life and grew as a person and a couple. We always knew that we couldn’t picture our lives with anyone else! I knew that he was going to ask me to marry him at some point soon after he got his Mechanical Engineering job. The more weeks that went by, the more eager and excited I felt…
how they asked
2 September 2018: On this morning we decided to meet his sister and her boyfriend at Tupelo Honey in Market Square for my favorite meal, brunch. We meet them for brunch almost every Sunday so this was not out of the ordinary. After a conversation of laughter and a fantastic meal, David asked me if I wanted to go to Citi-FIDO which is a dog boutique around the corner from Market Square. I replied, do you have to ask? Of course! As we started walking to Citi-FIDO, he suddenly stopped and asked if I wanted to go into Bliss Boutique first, which was completely the opposite direction. That is when I knew something was going to happen because he would never ask to go shopping.
We walked into Bliss and I was loving every second of him listening to the details about my favorite clothing brands. As we walked out of Bliss I was for sure he was going to ask in front of the Tennessee Theater, but we kept walking, past Market Square and into Citi-FIDO. At this point, I didn’t even care to look because I immediately felt butterflies in my stomach. I saw him texting and hiding from me and I knew he was trying to buy time for something. We walked to the car in the parking garage and I could tell something was on his mind. We usually turn right at the stop sign out of the garage, but we turned left instead.
The butterflies in my stomach sped up. We pulled into the parking lot of the World’s Fair Park and I was thinking, “Oh my gosh, this is it.” He grabbed my hand as we strolled through the smooth rocky pathway. I saw his sister and her boyfriend sitting on the hill with a camera and I instantly started tearing up. I saw that he had pink and red flower petals in the shape of a heart where we were going to stand. (I was told that was his idea and had the help of his mom and mine to set it up). He led me to the heart and gently held both of my hands.
He said, “Marissa, you make me the happiest man in the world………” My heart stopped. He expressed so many more affectionate words that I cannot remember because I was so excited!! He knelt down on one knee and said, “will you marry me?” I nodded my head yes and said of course. He slipped my stunning and extraordinary ring on my finger and I jumped up to give him a long kiss. My heart was so full of love and happiness. This moment was the best and I cannot express how thankful I am to have him as a future husband. I can’t wait to start my wedding planning!
