How We Met
Nick and I both worked at a camp each summer throughout college but I worked at our Washington location while he was in Texas. One summer my close friend, Taylor Smith and I decided to spend our summer in Texas. Taylor and Nick had been friends for a few years so he accompanies her to the Austin airport to pick me up. I met Taylor at curbside pick up with a hug and Nick threw my bag in the trunk and gave me a quick side hug as he introduced himself. The three of us ate tacos and took a photo in front of the famous “I love you so much” Austin wall.
By week 7 of summer, Nick and I were leading a group together and I was instantly drawn to his positivity and gracious heart. He became my best friend as I stuffed down all feelings of crushing on him. Little did I know, he had a crush on me also. He confessed his feelings for me at the end of summer on the back porch of the place we all lived. He was living in Austin at the time and I had to return home to Albuquerque, New Mexico. We knew, saying yes to a relationship was yes to long distance but I realized I’d rather be with him 600 miles apart than anyone a mile away from me. Dating him became the most fun year of my life, I fell in love with him more and more each day.
How They Asked
It was October 20, the day my mom had arranged all of me and my siblings to be together for the weekend to capture some family photos. Our close family friend and favorite photographer, Kim Schneider, arrived at our house and we all set off to the forest by the river.
A few minutes into the photos everyone kept asking what time it was and the fact that it was 6 pm alerted everyone that they needed to head toward the shore of the river for more photos.
As we walk through the trails I faintly begin to hear the song XO by John Mayer. I look at my mom and she smiled with tears as I then see Nick through the river brush. He’s standing on a blanket covered in white roses. When I saw him, I couldn’t help but yell “shut up!” I was so surprised!
He lives in Washington and I live in New Mexico. He had completely flown down and surprised me, with the help of my parents and Kim he organized this elaborate engagement without me ever catching on.
I ran to him and he took my hands and reminded me of the day we first met, the photo we took in front the “I love you so much wall” and how still to this day his love for me has only grown. There on one knee, he pulled out the ring of my dreams and asked me to be his wife.
My response wasn’t a simple yes, it was multiple “of course, of course!!” We headed back to my parents’ house while family and friends awaited with a party, celebrating with us.
