Mariah and Shaun
How We Met
It was the summer before my sophomore year of University of Alberta. My girlfriends and I decided to go out celebrating before we went back to school. I was newly single and ready to mingle. All four of us got dolled up and ready to get our dance party on! That’s when I met Shaun and his friends.
One of Shaun’s friends introduced herself, her boyfriend and Shaun. She told Shaun to “flex his abs for the nice young lady” to which I replied “No, don’t worry I’ve got my own set of washer board abs!” I am very good at pretending I’m much more muscular than I actually am. After breaking the ice by completely embarrassing myself, we got a round of drinks, exchanged numbers and hit the dance floor. We ended up dancing together all night long. Before I left Shaun offered to take me for a ride on his motorcycle. I agreed and said I would text him the next day to make a date.
Two days later he picked me up at my sorority house and took me for bubble tea. We talked for hours and rode around the city on his motorcycle. It was the first time I was ever on a bike, I was terrified but didn’t tell him because I didn’t want him to think I was a chicken. From that day on we spent time with each other every day. A month after we started dating, he took me to Jasper. That’s where I knew he was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. He was not like any other guy, there was something so special about him that I couldn’t explain.
how they asked
After I graduated in April 2015 from university. My parents surprised us with a trip to anywhere we wanted. I decided that we needed to go to Disneyland! I have always love Disneyland and there is no better place on earth to celebrate finishing final exams forever than the happiest place on Earth.
While we were there we received the Disney PhotoPass+ where they have photographers who will take your picture throughout the park. The second day there, Shaun suggested that we go get photos taken in front of the Cinderella castle when all of the Christmas lights were lit. I agreed, unaware of what he had in store, and jumped in line to have our picture. The photographer got us to do a few different poses like giving one another a kiss on the cheek. By the end of our mini photo session the photographer asked “Are there any other poses you guys would like to do?” That’s when Shaun chimed in “I have one more.” He dropped down on one knee. Tears immediately began to stream down my face. I knew what he was about to ask but he had caught me by surprise! He said “Will you marry me?” By this point I was so choked up that all I could do was nod yes. In that moment I felt like we were the only people in the world. It was absolutely magical.
Afterwards, Shaun surprised me with a bouquet of flowers and champagne at Catal Restaurant in Downtown Disney. As well as an appointment to have caricatures done the next day to commemorate our engagement.
