How We Met
We met in high school; LaGuardia, the “fame school” to be exact. We knew of each other, passed each other in the hallways but we never spoke. It was only until the junior year for me, senior year for him; where Kevin just so happened to be walking with a mutual friend that I stopped to say hi. He introduced himself and tried to flirt a little, and of course, as a female from Brooklyn, I didn’t pay him any mind and kept it pushing. My background is Ecuadorian, and with knowing the male habits of a “typical” Ecuadorian, I always told myself, “I will never date an Ecuadorian”. As time passed, we reconnected as the start of a friendship, little did I know what I swore to myself would never happen, did. We had our first date on his birthday which made it special. He is anything but “typical” and made me see a different side of him that I didn’t know existed. I took a chance on something I have never thought in a million years I would do and I’m glad I did. Now I know why they say Never say “never”!
how they asked
It all began with a quick getaway down to Florida for our 6-year anniversary. Our date is 11.11.11, so we wanted a quick escape to enjoy the last of heat before the brutal New York winter. We flew down the day before our anniversary and I knew Kevin had something planned, I just didn’t know what exactly. The night before our anniversary, he broke news to me that the initial plans he had got canceled due to the rainy weather expected in the morning. I told him not to worry that we can just go to one of the theme parks to celebrate us, it didn’t matter as long as we were together.
We decided on going to Disney World since we both had never been and boy, was the experience magical! Throughout the day I was picking up little hints of Kevin being weird, even him walking through security, whispering at them and pointing to me. When I walked over, the security guard says “congratulations!” I thought maybe she was referring to our anniversary pins but I didn’t look into further detail because I love being surprised.
As the day passed and it became darker, Kevin became quieter; and if you know Kevin … he’s anything but quiet! We drove off into one of the resorts in the animal kingdom and he takes me to the boat dock in the back of the resort. There, awaited a private yacht with balloons and a banner that said “Happy Anniversary”. We took off had some dinner and had a private view of the fireworks at Cinderella’s castle from the center of the lagoon. He told me to stand up to take some pictures, then told me to turn around. As I turned, my heart dropped to my stomach. I thought to myself, “is this really happening?! Is this what I think it is?!”
When he said “baby…”, I slowly turned back around and there he awaited… down on one knee with a beautiful pear-shaped ring. The world started going in slow motion. After all the beautiful words he said, with tears coming down from both our faces, I immediately said “yes”. The last-minute rushing, putting together the pieces of why he would sneak off, answering mystery phone calls, it was all to make up for the hot air balloon he initially had planned in order to propose.
It all worked out perfectly. Everything happens for a reason, I always say. It was all to make this moment an unforgettable one. Fell in love 11.11, engaged 11.11.. what can I say, 11 is our lucky number.
