How We Met
Caleb and I met when I was 19 years old and he was 20 years old. We both went to neighboring high schools, but did not know of each other. We also ended up attended neighboring colleges as well. In college, I always knew my end career goal was to become a Physician Assistant (PA-C).. One of the major requirements to be accepted into a master’s degree Physician Assistant Program is to have a certain amount of hours spent, “job shadowing” a PA-C. One day during my sophomore year of college I was job shadowing a PA-C in a gastroenterology office. One of the nurses in the office knew I was single and kept bringing up this guy that she knows that is cute and thought would be perfect for me. I really was not interested! A few weeks later she still talked about him and asked if she could give him my number. I would normally NEVER agree to giving my number to a random guy that I had never met, but I trusted her judgement and something inside of me told me to say “yes”. He ended up eventually texting me. After texting for a while, he asked me if I would like to go out on a date. Again, I would normally never agree to meet up with someone that I had never met in person, but again something inside of me told me to say “yes”. On our first date was on January 19, 2013; he picked me up from my dorm room and we went to dinner and a movie. The restaurant we originally wanted to go to, we could not find (it was a new place) so we ended up going to simple Ruby Tuesday’s. Then the movie theater had a ticket line completely out the door, so we ended up going to another theater about 20 minutes away. Even though there were some obstacles, it was a lovely date! He was so kind, handsome, and such a gentleman. After that date, we went out at least a couple times a week. We became “official” on March 3, 2013. It was only about a month along when I was talking with my roommate and told her, “I think he’s the one.” He really swept me off my feet! After a rough day, he would drop off my favorite cookies, or just randomly bring me a bouquet of flowers. He has always demonstrated such kindness not only to me, but to everyone around him. His genuine kindness to all people is one of the many reasons I fell in love with him. In 2014, he was accepted into a Doctor of Physical Therapy program, four hours away. I still had one year of undergraduate left. I was so excited for him that he was one step closer to his dream career of a Physical Therapist, but also upset that we would be long distance for at least a year. When I helped him move to his new school, the day I left to come home was so difficult. We cried and cried, but realized it was for a great thing: his education and future career! During that year I was applying to Physician Assistant programs, praying that I would be accepted at a school in the same city as him. Then one day I received a letter in the mail- I had been accepted to a school in the same city as Caleb! We were beyond excited! The next year we had our own apartment together and we studied our butts off! In May 2017, we both graduated from grad school- he finally had his Doctorate of Physical Therapy and I finally had my Master’s of Physician Assistant Studies. To this day, nearly five years later, Caleb still is the kindest person I know. He would do anything for me, he would do anything to help anyone, really. I still ask God every day how I was lucky enough to be blessed with this wonderful man, that I will soon get to call my husband. I am so thankful that I trusted the little voice in my head telling me to say “yes”.
how they asked
It was just a regular Saturday morning for us. Nearly every Saturday morning we go to our favorite little cafe for breakfast, it’s called The Sawhorse Cafe. After breakfast, we had planned to go cut down our Christmas tree at the local Christmas tree farm- Farr’s Christmas Tree Farm in Jersey Shore, PA. Just a week earlier we had gone to the farm to pick out and tag our perfect tree. We picked out what we thought was the most beautiful tree in the farm! I could not wait to go back to the farm to cut it down and bring it home. When we finally got to the farm to take our tree home, I was so excited! We had just a little bit of a walk to get to our tree. As we were walking, I looked to my left and noticed a man crouched down taking pictures and it looked like I was in his photos! I thought it was kind of strange, but didn’t think much of it. I thought maybe it was somebody taking pictures of the trees for the farm to advertise. We kept walking and I briefly forgot about the photographer. I knew our tree was coming up soon but I was not exactly sure where it was. I said to Caleb, shouldn’t our tree be around here? He said he thought so. Then, I looked ahead of me and noticed a tree with lights on it and a tree skirt at the bottom. I thought it looked like our tree, and it was around where our tree should have been, but I still did not think it was ours. I said to Caleb, “that tree is decorated” and he said “oh wow, yeah it is!”. It still didn’t register in my head. I thought maybe somebody really wanted to see what their tree looked like all decorated before they took it home! He got in front of me and we slowly walked around the tree. I looked at the side of the tree and saw an ornament of a ring box with a big fake engagement ring. I paused for a second and was finally getting the hint! I looked at Caleb in shock, and to my left heard the sound of cameras taking pictures. I looked over at two photographers capturing the moment. I looked back at Caleb and he was down on his knee, and asked me to marry him. I was in such shock! We both cried tears of joy. And of course, I SAID YES!
