How We Met
Prior to meeting Luke, my high school runs an annual “Matchmaker” in time for Valentine’s Day as a fundraiser for our school’s dance. Here, students will fill out a questionnaire, and a match will come out based on who we’re most compatible with. Lo and behold, Luke’s name was on my list. At the time, I didn’t know who he was except someone with a really difficult sounding last name. I put the results of “Matchmaker” out of my head.
During the next semester, I met Luke in 10th-grade history class (2007) and I finally put a face to the name. I remember him as the tall, quiet and shy guy (he still is to this day). We didn’t talk much back then but I had a sense of curiosity with him. We continued to have classes in our 11th and 12th grade of high school and started talking more frequently on MSN and hanging out in person. That was when I realized that there was something more beyond his quiet and shy exterior. Something truly special that I haven’t had or felt before.
How They Asked
Luke and I have gone on so many adventures together since we became an “official” couple in 2010. In December of 2017, we went on an amazing 2-week trip to visit some Scandinavian countries in Denmark, Sweden, Estonia and Finland.
When we were in Finland, we stayed at an igloo hotel and resort where we got to try and had so much fun doing various winter activities (reindeer rides, snowmobiling, husky sleds, and snowshoeing) and to try our luck with seeing the northern lights. We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights without any luck.
I was talking to my family back in Canada about our day and what we’ve been up to when Luke asked me to turn around. As I did, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him and be his wife. I was shocked, excited, and overwhelmed with so many emotions. I said yes with happy tears streaming down my face.
We talked for hours afterward and that was when we saw it. The northern lights. I would like to think that this was the universe’s way of showing their approval on our engagement. It sure was an epic way to close off our northern Finland trip before heading back to Helsinki. It was 10 years in the making since I met Luke and lucky number 7 since we officially became a couple.
Now, we’re planning our next adventure…marriage. We will say our I Do’s in front of all our loved ones in September 2019, and I can’t wait to get this new adventure started.
